Actually, it's hard to know whether this is Humor/Travel or Biography.

Fleet, an Australian comedian, has written this little book about his travels in Thailand. The book focusses on two parts of his adventures. The first is a hilarious account of a poker game gone wrong, this story really cracked me up! In the next section, he travels through the jungle to a rebel camp, where he finds himself in the middle of guerilla activity.
Funny, sad and a quick read.
I am offering this as a bookray.

A short read, I read this in two sittings. Ultimately I wasn't really satisfied with this as a book. I could see it perhaps working on stage with 'Fleety' providing the atmosphere and tension required for a successful storytelling.

I felt like the book had been duplicated directly from his stage notes, and hence involved a lot of "and then he said", "and then I said" which works on stage, but not so much on a printed page (for me anyway). It also felt like there were two distinct stories which weren't really joined, except for the fact that they both happened to him on the one trip to Thailand.

It definitely had strains of Fleety about this though. I could hear his voice as I read it. Loved the photos.

Onto awaywithfairies next!

Released on Friday, July 23, 2004 at postal release in Perth, Australia Controlled Releases.

Read this book very quickly - only took about 1.5 hours while on a flight to Perth. I, too, could hear Greg Fleet's voice while reading. I could just imagine this story being performed as a stage show.

Posted to Newk this morning. Happy reading!

Young Australian goes to Thailand. Gets fleeced. Travels to an area near a war zone. Ho hum. yawn. sorry. And thanks for sharing. I have been naughty and not yet PMed the next in line, but will do so now. Oops just looked I reckon i have that one already.
Added 1st August: I have not heard of the author.Maybe I should have? I think that the material is not that bad, but although it may make a good comedy show it is a bit thin for a book.

Turned up in the mail today, thanks newk for posting it, and felicia-fairy for starting this ring!

I love the look of the book, too, very nicely designed.

7 out of 10

I have to confess, I was so swamped with bookrings for a while there that Mr TQD managed to snaffle this one from my pile and read it first. His comment: "Funnier than a kick in the guts, more pathos than a pie in the face". And he gave it 7 stars.

I enjoyed this as well. Any book that has me going "noooooo!" out loud as YET AGAIN our protagonist does something stupid has my vote. And I could definitely hear the voice of Fleety, complete with pauses. (newk, you don't know Greg Fleet? I vaguely remembered his face from Neighbours - I only know about Neighbours through the ads, honestly. And then somewhere along the way he disappeared [read: got addicted to heroin]. Then he cleaned up and reappeared as a comic and has appeared on various shows - Glasshouse, Good News Week, that sort of thing. He's been on JJJ, which is where I mostly hear him. Dry sort of humour.)

It's not going to win any prizes for brilliant writing or anything, but it was a fun quick read and Mr TQD and I had a good natter about it. (He reckons that the scam pulled on Fleety is the oldest trick in the book. It was news to me though.)

I've just sent a PM to twinmaker for an address, and I shall pop this in the mail asap.

UPDATE 31-AUG-2004: Popped in the post to twinmaker today!

This book was great ( I finnished it a few days ago), short and actually laugh out loud funny (a rare thing for me). The scam in Thailand had me petrified and the time in Burma was fascinating. Love the cover too, took me a while to notice the passport style. Thanks Felicia for starting this book out and thanks to all those b4 me. Will pass this on to my fiance to read then will release.

Caught the book from a work colleague. Will pass it to my sister who is a member of amnesty international and who will enjoy the story. Even though, at times I felt the author was unnecessarily flippant not to mention unbelievably gullible he nevertheless got the message across of the tragic plight on the freedom fighters in Burma.
