This book was just too preachy for me. I couldn't decide if it was supposed to teach spoiled children a lesson, help kids dealing w/ a relative who has cancer, teach respect for elders, or what? It tried too hard, tried to be too many things, and I don't think any kid who has to read this is going to like it. I think adults will love it, as they will be under the misguided impression that this book will teach children any and all lessons they've been trying to teach. Unfortunately, this book is just about the lessons the author has learned or wants to teach.

There are definitely some good moments in this book, and I very much liked the character of Grampy, who the author says in the Afterward is based on his real life grandfather. Of course he's admirable -- the man he's based on is! But Andy . . . I just wanted to spank and give a time out. There was nothing endearing about this kid. Everything about him smacks of "kids these days", being spoiled, and ugh! Of course the author wants to teach him a lesson -- he's an obnoxious child! However, there are too many lessons in this book, and no kid is going to want to be preached at in the guise of "here's a fun book to read".

Noticed a couple of errors in this book, but they weren't *too* distracting. Now I'll have to think of a good release location. Too bad I'm not going to a beach any time soon. . .
