Picked this one up at last night's meeting at the Stamford Arms. (First time I went - nice people :-) )

Sorry, I couldn't get into the surreal rather dreamlike meanderings of the main character. So I am afraid that I applied the "upto page 50" rule on this book. I am sure that all will become meaningful further on in the book but I got too bored to carry on.

I am disappointed because I listened to a reading of "Remains of the Day" on BBC Radio 4 and found that absolutely beautiful.

This book is now on its way to another BC'er who needs to read it for her local book club.

Caught! Thanks a million pikkewyn :)
The post delivered it already last Tuesday, but they gave it to somebody in my apartment block who could not be reached. I was already stressing out, but today, finally, i got hold on it.

Will start a.s.a.p. and will let you know what i think of it.

I finished the book already a few weeks ago. Not in time for the book club appointment unfortunately, but by then I was already halfway through.

I'm afraid I'm not that positive about the book. I could really understand your decision to quit after 50 pages, pikkewyn! And as a matter of fact: only two out of the seven members of my book club managed to finish the book. The rest gave up, or simply didn't start reading at all!

In my opinion Ishiguro used way to much words and pages for this story. It's really getting boring because of that.
The story was very strange. One of the members of my book club saw a parallel with the world in the drawings by Escher. Ishiguro wanted to show a world where people are not able to make real contact. I think that is a very interesting startingpoint for a book, but reading The Unconsoled I only had the feeling Ryder was asleep, having a bad dream. It seemed as if his live was entirely made out of meetings with people by accident.

pikkewyn: thanks anyway that you made it possible for me to read the book. And thanks a lot for your lovely postcard (in Afrikaans!). I'm defenitely going to visit London (not been there yet).

Best of everything,
Annemarie

In a few days I'm going to send this one on to another Dutch BC'er who has this one on her wishlist.

thank you Wilmar, for sending me the book. I read most of the books of Ishiguro and I know he doesn't give his thoughts easily. Most times I hate the main character of his books, is the story slow or too weird for words. But I always keep on reading and after finishing the book stays in my head for days. That's why I decided that Ishiguro is - for me - an important writer. I wish I didn't have so much other (ring)books to read....
