Ok. You've probably heard of this book, I imagine you've heard of the author and it's quite possible you've seen the film as well (starring Colin Firth).
It was Hornby's first book, and I suppose you could say that it's about one man's love of a football team. Now I like football (although I don't quite understand the levels of obsession and devotion displayed here) and I think if you like football, and you are of a certain age, then you will greatly enjoy the story of Arsenal's dramtic title win in 1989 and suchlike tales. However I think it's unfair to say that this is a book about football; in common with Hornby's next book, "High Fidelity", this is actually not so much about football, as it is about what it's like to be a man. As the chap from the Observer says on the back cover:
"Fever Pitch is a sophisticated study of obsession, families, masculinity, class, identity, growing up, loyalty, depression and joy."
Don't let that put you off, it's also a cracking read. Just don't watch the film.
I've bought this especially for the UK Bookcrossing Unconvention in Birmingham and I will be releasing it there.
