Really interesting. This book takes place about 30 years ago, and it gave me perspective on how psychiatric treatment has changed. I work in mental health, and this book helped me to spot some areas where the mental health professionals working with the main character may not have handled situations very well. I've sent this book off to Syrinpt in Portugal who is next on the bookring. Thanks cambridgelass!

I'll read it as fast as I can!

I'm sooo sory it took my so long to review the book, but I haven't been inspired to write (reading takes up a lot of my free time).

First of all, thaks for starting this bookring, cambridgelass. I had seen the movie a couple of years ago and was instantly drawn to read the book.

Unfortunatly, I have to say that I actually liked the movie better. Maybe its because I saw it first, or because the book deals with a lot of technical/psychiatric terms, I had a little bit of problems to read it.

But I still enjoyed the book and ended up wondering just exactly how much has changed it terms of this type of treatment (the electric shocks one of the characters received was really shocking, I thought that only existed in the movies).

Just finished the book (a very quick read), and I really liked it. I thought the whole psychiatric "methods" of the the late 60's were so interesting to read about.

Will be mailing to pheelya asap. :)

Ok, now I am disturbed. I read the book and have officially self-diagnosed myself.
I too am a borderline personality!!

Ok, seriously though - the book was great. I vaguely remember seeing the movie years ago & really can't compare the two, they are very different.

This was a good, quick read. I'm sure anyone can easily identify parts of themselves in this novel, I mean we are all a little "crazy" in one way or another, right?!?!

I've mailed this one out to the next reader on 4/18. Enjoy!

Just finished reading this book, it was a quick and interesting read. I liked for example how the author explained velocity (I forgot what the other one was called).
I'm going to send the book on as soon as I have the address of the next person on the list.

I sent this book to jellycat as I was leaving for a week, so my journal entry got delayed.
I was a bit disappointed by the book. I liked it well enough, but compared to the other books I have read about being crazy (Meestal vergaat de wereld om 9 uur (~Most days armageddon is at 9am), Flowers for Algernon and I never promised you a rose garden) this one was fairly conventional. The book is very convincing when it argues that there is no clear division between being crazy and normal, but I didn't need to be convinced of that anyway.

This is probably a first for me, but I liked the movie a lot better. I know it's a real story but the author just relates the facts, she doesn't really talk about her relationship with the other patients. She doesn't explain why she ended up being there and she analyses insanity a bit too much for my liking. The movie is a lot more human, it deals with their relationships, the way they interact and feel about each other, you end up caring for them. If I wanted to learn about the technical side of insanity I'd read a medical journal! Thanks for the BookRing, cambridgelass

I read the book during yesterday and today. I found it quite irritating when it did jump between a somekind of memoir and a nonfiction book. I didn't either find it very logical.

Even tough I didn't really like the book it wasn't a total waste of time. It did have it's good moments even though they were few.

I did read the book as part of my Book from every country -reading challenge. The country was USA.

The book will be on it's way to Flaming-Ice as soon as I get the mailing address.

The book started its long journey to Flaming-Ice today! Hopefuly it will get there safely and quickly. I tried to put it to air mail so it would get to Kuwait quicker, but the Finnish mailing system is sometimes bit comfusing to me (There is no posting status called Air mail, so I don't really know which one is it).

9 out of 10

I really enjoyed reading this book. I was actually planning to read other books before this, but I guess I needed to read something crazy and short. This was crazy and short enough. I agree with I-Spy, I think we're all crazy in a way or another. I think I am borderline personality too!

I liked the book more than the movie, unlike other fellow BCers. Maybe it is because the movie was different than the book, and since it's a realy story, the real real story is the book not the movie. In the movie, I hated Lisa's character because she was responsible for Daisy's death. In the book, Lisa has nothing to do with it. I also felt compassion for Lisa in the book more than I did in the movie. Actually I kind of liked her more in the book rather than the movie. I liked the part where the author mentioned seeing Lisa with a boy who happens to be her son. Ermmm, it's how the reader gets to know about the characters' life after the institution that I liked, in other words. I think there had to be some changes in the story to make a good movie out of it. The book also expalined the name of the book, a painting by Vermeer, while you cannot know this in the movie.

Thanks you, cambrigelass, for including me in the ring. I'll send the book to the next person on the list ASAP :-)

I agree with all above: this was a quick read.

I vaguely remember seeing the movie. From what I recall, the movie version seemed to provide more of a story, while the book seems to be more along the lines of journal entries that aren't necessarily in chronological order.

Still, it was easy to read. I really liked the Mind vs. Brain chapter.

I've PM'd the next bookcrosser for her address and will send Girl on it's way shortly. Thanks for the bookring cambridgelass!

I really enjoyed this, although at times it was a bit slow and I got confused as to what was happening when. I never realised (although I've seen the film) that the story was true.. I find it highly disturbing that Kaysen was treated the way she was. As she says, their criteria for borderline personality includes nearly everyone I know.
Am sending this to BeaglesAngel today, sorry but the only time I get to go to the Post Office is at the weekend (especially when there's over 2 feet of snow outside) :)

8 out of 10

Before I read this book, the film was one of my favourites. This didn't change after I had read the book, although I did enjoy the book. I think that although they have similarities, they do differ quite a bit. The book seems to concentrate on Susanna's inner thoughts and feelings and her personal experiences whereas the film included the other characters more and was more about the hospital and the story.

In previous journal entries, the character of Lisa has been brought up. Whilst I agree that the film makes the character more sinister and dark, I think that the film Lisa is a more interesting character to watch than the book Lisa.

Whilst I did enjoy the film more than the book, I think that the book was very enjoyable and would recommend it.

It's on it's way back to cambridgelass today!
