From the back cover:
Ever since her engagement, the strangest thing has been happening to Marian McAlpin: she cannot eat. First meat. Then eggs, vegetables, cake, pumpkin seeds – everything! Worse yet, she has the crazy feeling that she is being eaten. She really ought to feel consumed with passion. But she just feels …. consumed.

Although this novel is a bit dated (it was written in 1969) it is still a hilarious read. It is about a woman who tries to do what she thinks is expected of her (getting married and starting a family), but although she doesnot realize it, everything inside her is protesting against this. She gets further and further removed from her real self and starts acting ever more strangely.

I inmensely look up to Margaret Atwood. I've read five or so novels by her so far, the edible woman not being one of them. I will surely read it.

This is really silly of me. "Look, an Atwood I do not know! Gotcha!"
And then, upon coming home: "O. I already have read and released this one."

As there are so many Atwood-fans among the dutch bookcrossers, I think it's time I read one of her books.

Journal Entry 7 by Qimp from Deventer, Overijssel Netherlands on Sunday, July 1, 2007
And I did read one of Atwood's books, but not this one. I read Alias Grace instead and I didn't particularly like it. And then there's Cat's eye still sitting on my bookhelf. So I think it's time to let this one go on with its travels. It will be available until I found a nice place to release it.

Sent to an unsuspecting BookCrosser on 14 July 2007. Enjoy!

Deze gaat op het verheugstapeltje..

Finished today. Interesting read. The things happening in the book are not spectacular I thought, but still Atwood managed to write a high-paced novel. I enjoyed it! So Qimp: dank nogmaals!

Later on, I will add two citations from the book that struck me as interesting. Something else that struck me - and not as positive - though it is only a small detail in the book, is that the characters from the book think of homosexuality as a disease.. It is written in 1969, but still, that surprised me.

I hope to send the book on soon.

All this talking, this rather liquid confessing, was something I didn't think I could ever bring myself to do. It seemed foolhardy to me, like an uncooked egg deciding to come out of its shell: there would be a risk of spreading out too far, turning into a formless puddle. (p. 97)

***

She noticed a peculiar sensation in her left hand. It wanted to reach across and touch him on the shoulder. Its will seemed independent of her own: surely she herself wanted nothing of the kind. (p. 125)

Thanks so much for this RABCK Wilmar. I look forward to reading it.

This is a very enjoyable read. I loved all the descriptions of life in the sixties, the houses, clothes and the attitudes. Their attitude to food was especially interesting, totally removed from the actually source, it was all boil-in-the-bag type food, I suppose the first supermarkets had just opened. It's a light read, very different from later books I have read by Atwood.
Thanks to all the bookcrossers in the Netherlands who have passed it on. As this was RABCKed to me, I'll try to send it on in the same way.
