'The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. . .'

This is the story of the last unicorn on earth, a creature with the 'oldest, wildest grace that horses never had'. She had lived contentedly alone for hundreds of years, and would have continued to do so, believing that somewhere in the world there were others like her, had she not overheard a huntsman say that she was the last of her kind. Thereafter she could have no peace of mind until she had left the safety of her enchanted wood and gone to see for herself. And once exposed to the covetous eyes of men, there was peril for her at every turn. . .

The Last Unicorn is gossamer-light and bitter sweet, an unforgettable novel that has been a hugely successful animated film and is likely, its author says, to haunt the rest of his career. It is one of the greatest fantasy novels ever written, by a writer who published his first book, A Fine and Private Place, when he was twenty, and who draws his inspiration from the animal world that has fascinated him since boyhood.

'Beagle is a true magician with words, a master of prose and a deft practitioner in verse. He has been compared with Lewis Carroll and J. R. R. Tolkien, but he stands squarely and triumphantly on his own feet.

Ehehe, ce l'ho io :P So di non essere in lista, ma alla fine, essendo meno oberata di ring, l'ho preso al posto di Lavale. Last, puoi spostarla vicino a me, così poi faccio passaggio a mano? Grazie :)

Me l'ha passato Lizzyblack qualche giorno fa. Scusate, ma non riuscivo a fare JE nei giorni scorsi.
Ho provato a cominciarlo varie volte, ma non riesco. Mi sa che non è proprio il mio genere.
Lo passo al più presto a chi segue.

(Virtual participation in this ring, since the book hasn't got to me yet, but I read a copy on my own anyway...)

It's a good mix of fantasy, fairy tale and a challenge and sometimes even an ironic take on both. Its main characters are memorable anyway and I quite enjoyed it.
The story begins with a Unicorn finding out that she might be the last of its kind, and starting on a quest to find the others, or rescue them. A mysterious magician soon joins her, as well as a woman, one of the few who can still recognise and thus be inevitably charmed by a Unicorn. They head for a king's castle, to fight the Red Bull, the ultimate enemy. A prince joins the story there, as well as a cat (of course :-) ). Each of them will end up changed in different ways, and find their own bittersweet happy ending.

Remarkably, in my edition (possibly the same as this ring?), after the actual novel you can find a lovely novelette, "Two hearts", which makes a great coda for the novel and lets us see more of its main characters' story, as well as a very interesting interview with the author.

Thanks for the ring, last-unicorn, I wouldn't have been interested in this novel without you organizing the ring (even if your book did not get to me yet)!!
