A simple story of a young fisherman, Kino, and his wife, Juana. In their humble existence, they only wish for their son to one day achieve great intellect and wealth. But most importantly they are concerned with his health, especially after a dangerous sting from a scorpion. Hidden amongst the simplicity of this tale are many horrific examples of the selfish nature of mankind. This is a short book that everyone should take a moment to read. The words flow with a poetic sound. While reading, I could picture the author narrating, with an audience gathered around a campfire, as he relayed this simple parable of life. His voice soft and melodic until in the end when it would rise with fierce anxiety only to reach the climax and pause....to sadly reveal the tragic end. My heart ached for the characters. I found myself wanting to read the story again, hoping the ending would be different the second time around. This book will be placed in a book box very soon. |
