Journal Entry 1 by GrammarBroad from Baton Rouge, Louisiana USA on Wednesday, June 23, 2004
Paperback, August 1995 ed. "Through the eyes of Rukmani, a peasant woman from a small village in India, NECTAR IN A SIEVE explores painful and disturbing aspects of poverty and a village's transformation from agriculture to industry. Rukmani's strong and loving marriage and her devotion to her children provide hope and dignity in the midst of such deplorable conditions. Additional insights into pain and suffering are presented in conversations between Rukmani and Kenny, a British doctor who lives in the village." Disturbing and fascinating reading about the indomitable spirit of human beings. #610 Mail released today 8-23-04 to JDT. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 3 by JDT from Pleasanton, California USA on Saturday, October 23, 2004
Beautiful little book - from the cover art, title, on. But also harsh, heartbreaking, gritty - an admirable life of survival, persistence and resilience. Sending on to lauraloo29 - part of a book relay. Enjoy!

I'm not sure what to think of this book. It certainly held my interest. But so sad! Interesting to read. All the other East Indian stories I have read, seem to be from the people who are a bit more well off. I did find the main character's thoughts on the restrictions on veiled Muslim women interesting. A different perspective. Thank you for sharing.

Journal Entry 10 by Lotusflower77 from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Thursday, August 11, 2005
Although the story is beautifully written, I couldn't help but think what a depressing and sad story it is. Even after having lived in India for almost 20 years, it is hard for me to imagine poverty like the kind described in the book. Not saying it doesn't exist, just saying it is hard to read about it.
