I bought this book as I knew nothing about India and thought it was time I learnt! Unsurprisingly, given the title of the book, the main focus is on the rulers of India and their interaction with the British - I didn't really learn anything about the day-to-day lives of "ordinary" Indians. But there is plenty of detail about the astonishing wealth of the maharajahs, pastimes (hunting and cricket), the snobbery and racism amongst the British, the treatment of women. There is also information about what happened since the end of the Empire (1947) and since Indira Gandhi removed the princely privileges in 1972. An interesting read.

Bookray!
I've decided to offer this as a bookray.

This was an interesting read about a period of time and a culture I knew not very much about. As I mentioned to dododumpling, my gran was in India during the time the book is set in. I'm sure she would have seen some of these characters - her father owned a ferry firm near Bombay and maharajahs, UK ambassadors, etc. must have used it. Fascinating to have a small insight. Thank you dododumpling for sharing.

Sent to Sorgin.

Just to let you know this book has been on a vacation. I took this book along to Cuba with me and started reading it last week during the period when we were confined to the hotel due to Hurricane Rita.

Like others before me i found this book fascinating, an insight into a time period and a class of people i knew little about. It was great to read of these Princes who ruled over vast territories in India and their somewhat decadent, slightly hedonistic lifestyles, yet there was a certain charm about them and it's a tad sad that since 1947 and the end of the Empire the Princes began to lose their power, their wealth, and their palaces are somewhat in decline.

Thanks for sharing this book dododumpling.

I must offer my sincere apologies for not adhering to the rules of this bookring, i only pm'd the next reader a few days ago and am still waiting for a reply, but the book will be on its way again soon

It was a fascinating read, and at the same time a shocking one. I had mixed feelings about the maharajahs: from one point of view, they were living in absolute splendor while their subjects were on the verge of starvation - not unsimilar from other heads of state in Europe not too many years ago, and still going on in many parts of the world today -, however at the same time I felt angry at the colonial power of Britain, as they were treated in many cases just as a lower species - but this is the usual racist issue that gets me going!
Ann Morrow has managed to put together a great portrait of a time in life of the British and Indian society, and it was helpful to have some photographs in the middle section of the book to see what those fairytale people looked like. Just a few days ago I saw a documentary on BBC2 on Indira Ghandi, which I HAD to watch, and now I will be on the lookout for more material on the relationship between Britain and India to learn more.

The book is going to be shipped on Tuesday to Australia to jackiea...happy reading to you, and thanks to our raymaster for sharing this pearl with the world.

Oh lord! I've had this little book since early in the year, got sidetracked, reorganised my loungeroom furniture, and it ended up in a box! So sorry to have held it up. My immediate next order of business will be to find out where it is to go next and send it there!

Next participant has been PM'd, will post out next week!

The book arrived last week. I left it in our car - the garage is well away from the house - and although I've started reading it in the car hadn't thought to bring the BCID # up to the house. It is definitely here though and already I am finding it fascinating. As with other readers before me there is much to be learned about the life and times of those princely families.

In case anyone wonders why I read in the car, my beloved and I are on a walking programme but I've signed up to less time than he optimistically signed for so we start off together and I turn round after 20 minutes while he carries on so I gain about 20 minutes reading time each day. If that is too much information I apologize.

Reluctantly I must face that the short dips I've taken into this book were not sufficiently enticing to make me settle down and read it in the diligent fashion that the content would dictate.

Maybe all that wealth was too depressing. I did enjoy the photos though.

I'm grateful to be included in this bookring and to have had the opportunity. Thanks Carlynlee for sending it to me.

I'm posting it to mlbish today.

I rec'd this book several weeks ago, sorry for not journaling earlier. I'm trying to read it, really I am. But I'm finding that the author seems to assume that I know what she's talking about, as if I were born and raised in India, which I was not, so I'm having a bit of trouble following along. If I don't get through it in the next week or so, I will send it on to the next in line.
