I bought this for FIFTY CENTS at a used book sale at my library, can you believe it? It's just like new, too! I was planning on releasing it, but the more I think about it, the more I think I ought to read it first. You know, I think I will.

from Amazon:
We meet 13-year-old Briony Tallis in the summer of 1935, as she attempts to stage a production of her new drama "The Trials of Arabella" to welcome home her older, idolized brother Leon. But she soon discovers that her cousins, the glamorous Lola and the twin boys Jackson and Pierrot, aren't up to the task, and directorial ambitions are abandoned as more interesting prospects of preoccupation come onto the scene. The charlady's son, Robbie Turner, appears to be forcing Briony's sister Cecilia to strip in the fountain and sends her obscene letters; Leon has brought home a dim chocolate magnate keen for a war to promote his new "Army Ammo" chocolate bar; and upstairs, Briony's migraine-stricken mother Emily keeps tabs on the house from her bed. Soon, secrets emerge that change the lives of everyone present....

I am chin-deep in books that I have to read, and Atonement just isn't priority at the moment. So, it's going on a trip. Bookring!

Flawless prose...meticulous detail....sleepy, languid beginning and then a disaster from which you cannot tear yourself. The ending caught me by surprise.

In the mail to outofreach on Tuesday, 18 January 2005

I was away for a few weeks, so this book was sitting snug in my mailbox waiting for me to find it. It's now safely home and I'm looking forward to sinking into it as soon as I'm finished what I'm reading. I love the ice fishing shack poscard - only since we are having an exceptionally slow spirng, it feels a bit too close to home! Thanks for sending it and I'll journal again soon.

I very much enjoyed this book. It wasn't quite what I expected having pictured something far mroe dramatic. Instead, the tension in this book builds like the heat did for everyone in the story. The pressure isn't from one dramatic event, but from all these small tensions buildig up. The event that makes it all collapse is part of, but also apart from, the whole family daama taking place. Its a twister of a book, since we get the might have been of a repentant girl who makes it all right later on, but then realize that some (but not all) is actually indeed a might have been and they never did get the second chance. Or did they? There's lots in this story about writing and authors, and ownership of stories and sins of omission and pride, and maybe forgiveness of self. So, thought it was more thoughtful than i anticipated, I have enjoyed it and will now send it on its way.

Thanks Czerk for having the ring. I really liked this book, I find the way McEwan changes the view of what happens between narrators, and how this changes the view the reader gets of what happens facinating. He does a really good job of taking a set of experiences and showing it through different eyes and how this can lead to a tragic outcome. The forshadowing of Robbie (from his character in the play Twelfh Night- Malvolio) is particularly interesting.
I am going to PM Ilios, I hope she enjoys it.

I finished this book yesterday and I am glad I read it. I share the sentiment of other BXers regarding the beginning of the book: at first, I had a hard time getting into it, but I was hooked after 20 pages. McEwan has a wonderfully languid and parsimonious prose. His descriptions of seemingly anodyne scenes brings to the surface a lot of emotion and deep understanding of human nature. His subject matter is original and enthralling. We are used to adults being malicious and revengful. But how to deal with a child whose jealousy will ruin two people's lives? Is forgiveness possible? The confrontation between Briony and the lovers is absolutely amazing and the ending is heart-breaking. I am looking forward to reading other novels from this author.

PS: I still don't know why my entries look so weird...

St. Paul/MN/USA - I received this a couple days ago, and it looks absolutely lovely. It may take me a bit to finish it as I've got about a million other books to read right now, but it will be done. :-D Thanks everyone!

Journal Entry 20 by Zarylia from Saint Paul, Minnesota USA on Monday, November 27, 2006
Oh heavens, I am torn between guilt and amusement that I finished this book precisely a year after I first journaled it. Sorry Czersk and Cass01! I always have the best of intentions, I swear. Anyway, I am terribly terribly sorry to have kept this book for so long, but I am also terribly happy that I did not simply pass it on. I adore this book. McEwan has a rare knack for describing with more precision than years of introspection have bestowed on me the complexity (and sometimes simplicity) of human emotion. Not only that, but his metafiction is stunning. I must admit, I am a sucker for anything resembling metafiction, but biases aside, McEwan's awareness of writing as a craft is something that I think all English majors can strive toward. I will be purchasing a copy of this for myself. Thank yous to Czersk and all of the other lovely BookCrossers who kept the ring going. And now, if Cass01 is still interested, the book is off across The Pond. :-D

Journal Entry 22 by Cass01 from Maidstone, Kent United Kingdom on Monday, March 12, 2007
Finished. What can I say? What a fantastic book! Briony was a tiresome child - I just wanted to shake her! The rest of the story was written brilliantly, and the twist at the end was such a shock I quite literally burst into tears!
