I was pleasantly surprised by this book. There has been a lot of critiques because Hillary comes across unemotional and detached. I don't agree with that. Afterall, she still has a political career to consider. Although this is not the best writing, I feel it was written in the same manner as she speaks. It told some great stories and made me respect her even more.

Possibly a bookring?

Hillary Rodham Clinton is known to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet few beyond her close friends and family have ever heard her account of her extraordinary journey. She writes with candor, humor and passion about her upbringing in suburban, middle-class America in the 1950s and her transformation from Goldwater Girl to student activist to controversial First Lady. Living History is her revealing memoir of life through the White House years. It is also her chronicle of living history with Bill Clinton, a thirty-year adventure in love and politics that survives personal betrayal, relentless partisan investigations and constant public scrutiny.

Hillary Rodham Clinton came of age during a time of tumultuous social and political change in America. Like many women of her generation, she grew up with choices and opportunities unknown to her mother or grandmother. She charted her own course through unexplored terrain -- responding to the changing times and her own internal compass -- and became an emblem for some and a lightning rod for others. Wife, mother, lawyer, advocate and international icon, she has lived through America's great political wars, from Watergate to Whitewater.

The only First Lady to play a major role in shaping domestic legislation, Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled tirelessly around the country to champion health care, expand economic and educational opportunity and promote the needs of children and families, and she crisscrossed the globe on behalf of women's rights, human rights and democracy. She redefined the position of First Lady and helped save the presidency from an unconstitutional, politically motivated impeachment. Intimate, powerful and inspiring, Living History captures the essence of one of the most remarkable women of our time and the challenging process by which she came to define herself and find her own voice -- as a woman and as a formidable figure in American politics.

This was a very interesting read, not because of the writing style (it took forever to get through the first, rambling, jumpy chapter!), but because of the insights into the White House. My only criticism is the re-telling of major news events. We all know what happened. I was looking for more personal reaction and insight. Some of the best parts were the family stories (I wish there had been more of them).

I've been trying to reach the next people on the list to find out where to send this next, but am not having much luck. As soon as I hear back from someone who wants the book, it will be on its way!

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought that I would. I expected to be bored by a lot of the events, but was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the little things that I had missed when they were actually happening. I liked the stories about Hillary as a college student, mom, wife, and other roles in her life.

Thanks so much for sharing this book, i0xi0x!

I really look forward to reading this. Thanks for sending it to me, oldreader. I'll journal again soon.

4/24 It is going kinda slow but I am about half way through. So far this book is very interesting.

Journal Entry 17 by fizzfred from Sacramento, California USA on Wednesday, May 11, 2005
The way she wrote this was a bit bothersome but once you get past it you find some very interesting stories. I agree with FranciJo, hearing more of her personal insight would have been nice and the family stories were the best part.

My sister briefly met Hilary once in DC and couldn't think of a great compliment to give her. I've been thinking about it since and decided I would tell her that she did a great job with Chelsea. Of all the incredible things this family has gone through, Chelsea seems to be a pretty normal, happy and intelligent woman. Whatever the Clinton's have done they have to be good people just for that reason.

Thanks so much for sharing this book, i0xi0x. I sent it to laffoutlewd today. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 18 by laffoutlewd from Rio Rancho, New Mexico USA on Monday, May 23, 2005
Received on Wednesday, when the mailman finally delivered all the mail he'd been holding for me at the post office because he wasn't sure if I really moved in here or not. So far, I'm enjoying it, overall. I'll let you know what I really think when I'm done.

Thanks for sending it, fizzfred!

Journal Entry 19 by i0xi0x from Youngstown, Ohio USA on Saturday, February 11, 2006
It seems as if this bookring has stalled. Laffoutlewd has had the book since May, and I have PM'd them to ask about the status. I have received no reply. Until I hear from laffoutlewd, I am going to assume they still have the book. Sorry to all those still waiting to read this on the bookring, and sorry to my family and friends who were going to read it once it came home.
