One aspect of the story is similar to that of Middlesex - the main character is not who he appears to be. However, the main character, Coleman Silk, knows who he is and has made the changes in his life to suit the path he wanted to take. The story is much more than a discovery of Silk; it is a discovery of human nature. How do we become who we are? Society versus nurture. How do our decisions and secrets affect our lives and others? How and why do we choose the people who surround us and why do only divulge pieces of ourselves to some of those idividuals? How often do we keep secrets from ourselves?

While the introspective/philosopher side of me loved the book, the "I want enjoyment" side of me was sometimes bored with the author's/narrator's continuing commentary. I don't want to say diatribe, but some might classify it as that.

At times I felt as if I was sitting with my husband and his French friend, Eric, after they had both had a few glasses of wine - too much talking and not enough doing.
