I picked this up after Ms. Sutphen read from her poetry at the Women's Federated Clubhouse here in Marquette. Like her previous book, "Straight Out of View", it contains a selection of insightful free-verse poems (and an occasional villanelle), many of which are set in the Minnesota countryside where she grew up.
I always find it more interesting to read about areas that I know, or am interested in, and Ms. Sutphen's poems are as effective in giving a sense of the upper midwest as, say, August Derleth's regional fiction set in Wisconsin. The fact that the personal relationships that she describes are universal makes her work more than just "regional poetry", though.
As always, Gentle Reader, you are free to disagree....
