9 out of 10

I thought this book was great. I wished I really could become a literary detective, Thursday Next is a very inspirational role-model!

MarahSulloy contacted me directly to ask if I wanted to swap this book w/her.
So today I'll be going to the Post Office to get this sent off to her in Germany- happy reading!

Wow, thanks, it got here in less than 3 days!

I love that about Europe. :-) Can't wait to read it.

I'm taking a short break from the Thursday Next novels (we have the next two books in the series as well) while returning to some non-fiction for a while. I don't want to get all Thursday'd out too quickly.

I'm pretty sure we're ready to part with this one, if anyone is interested in it.

I must have received this a while ago and dived headlong into the story, completely neglecting to journal - I am SO SORRY, nikiem! I loved this book. So much so that I went on to read the rest of the series. The more literarily-minded you are, the more enjoyment you'll wring out of this series. This one is on it's way to Iojima in France.

Gratefully received today. Now I can start the series!

"Ingenious -- I'll watch Jasper Fforde nervously." (Terry Pratchett).
I don't think TP has too much to worry about. Science fiction and fantasy normally have a logic of their own, which this book lacks. Fforde throws out silly ideas (a pencil with a built-in spellchecker) which don't even make sense in their own context. The literary allusions aren't esoteric enough for the truly well-educated (I'm guessing, here) or clever enough to be really entertaining: more like showing off -- badly: "Hey, look what I've read in school!" Very disappointing.

Since I appear to be the only person in the world who didn't like this, I'll accept that something is out of whack in my psyche. And since it appears to be appropriate for an upcoming RABCK occasion, it is going out as a RABCK and kindly meant. :-)
