This is the first novel Ruth Rendell wrote under her pseudonym Barbara Vine. The novels she writes as Barbara Vine as psychological thrillers, written partly as flashbacks, partly in the present, leaving the reader to try and figure out what happened in the past to cause the situation in the present.

This novel is very vivid, full of unexpected twists, and makes for compulsive reading. Unlike traditional murder mysteries, you're not guessing who the murderer is - the novel starts with the announcement of the hanging of Vera Hillyard for murder - rather you're trying to work out why it happened, and what exactly happened.

Have received it and have already read the first 10 pages from the book this morning. So far it looks just like MyopicMeringue described it, with present story combined with flashbacks of the past. I hope to read it within the week and send it further early next week. Will journal it again.
Thanks for adding me to the ray.

A rather enjoyable read. I cannot say it's on my top 10 list, but I can recommend the book to new readers, nevertheless.
Waiting for some more info from biffin44 and I will send the book on Thursday to the UK.

I didn't find this book an easy read. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it. It is a good novel, not really a crime novel, more a psychological one. Barbara Vine describes very well the atmosphere and the characters, and it's really asphyxiating! (wich probably explains why I didn't enjoy reading it! I suffered through this book!)
So I guess the book is so good it was hard for me to read it. I couldn't get my mind of it when I put it down.

Thank you for letting me read this, MyopicMeringue!

The book travels to ludymiss today!
