Written when he was 25, LOVE AMONG THE CHICKENS launched P.G. Wodehouse's career as a novelist and introduced the world to Uckridge, one of his most extraordinary inventions.
This is my first ever P.G.Wodehouse and, I feel, a good one to start with as this was the first novel he had published. It was a great book to read because it was wonderfully fun and relaxing - perfect holiday literature. P.G.Wodehouse is wonderfully witty and the whole novel simply radiates sunbeams and humour! It's written in the first person by the young author and hero Jeremy Garnet who is dragged by his irascible friend Ukeridge and his new bride to help them on their new chicken farm. Of course, this leads to him falling into all kinds of scrapes and meeting a certain beautiful young lady called Phyllis...

I've had some interest in this book, and thought I'd start an international bookring with it. The book is great fun and an ideal summer read. It's quite a short book, so I would like to keep turn-over times short (Max 4 weeks)

The rules are:

> the ring is open for everyone
> make a journal entry when you receive the book
> make a controlled release entry when posting it
> try to read and pass the book on within 4 weeks of receiving it
> when you're almost done, contact the next person on the list for their address,
even if you've already got it on file (people tend to move house)
> always confirm with the person next in line, if they still want to read the book
> no response is received after two attempts and one week, contact me and then next person on the list.
> if there are any delays or changes please PM me
> have fun

Great introduction to Wodehouse, and Ukridge! Had to keep going back to the start to remind myself how to proounce his middle name in my head. Thouroughly enjoyed it - thanks gerenggat! (where does your name come from?)

Posted it today to pammykn in Florida (does anyone else notice that our stateside friends never put the country in when they give you their address?)

Journal Entry 6 by pammykn from Decatur, Alabama USA on Tuesday, October 19, 2004

Delightful read! It's been many years since I've read any Wodehouse. This one was just as good as the others I remember reading. Gotta love Ukridge, no pity parties for that chap. Thanks so much for sharing this book. Will be mailing off to spacedog on Saturday 11/06.

Journal Entry 8 by spacedog from Cambridge, Massachusetts USA on Wednesday, November 10, 2004
will be reading w/in a week. thanks.

11/12/04: finished this today. i know i'll prob. be in the minority, but i didn't enjoy this as much as i thought i would. the writing is wittily humorous in the way the british do so well, but the plot and the characterization (with the exception perhaps of garnet the main character) is pretty thin; and i found ukridge to be less an endearing scamp than an irresponsible slacker. still, i enjoyed wodehouse's writing and will prob. pick up another book by him.

i've contacted the next person and will ship in the next day or two.

I, for one, loved this - once I finally got around to reading it - and now am actually sad for it to be done. This was a merry little romantic comedy, and if it was easy to predict, it's only because it's such a great formula that it's no wonder it's a Hollywood staple. I thought the characters were comic wonders. Comic characters aren't intended to be tremendously deep, multi-level, or complex most of the time; merely endearing. These were. It made me smile almost constantly, and I thank it for that. --and thank you all for sharing it with me. As soon as I get the address for it's destination, it will be in the post.

I really enjoyed reading this funny story.
All ends well, and that's good!

Thank you gerengatt for letting me read it!

I mailed the book to Fellraven two days ago.

Journal Entry 13 by Fellraven from Redditch, Worcestershire United Kingdom on Wednesday, February 23, 2005
Received from Brujula in today's post. It's only a short book but I may not get around to reading it for a couple of weeks. It should certainly move on within the usual 4-week period though.

Thanks!

Well now. This is the first Wodehouse I can remember reading though I've heard dramatisations of several of his pieces on the radio.

It was more or less what I was expecting - amusingly whimsical or whimsically amusing - and an introducton to his writing which most certainly makes me want to read more when in the mood for something light and witty and charmingly barking.

Many thanks to gerenggat for sharing this. I'll post it back to complete the ring as soon as gerenggat sends me her address.
