Very enjoyable, very funny, entertaining, and informative. This is my first time reading anything by Bill Bryson, and I really liked it. I can't wait to read his other books.

This came in today's mail, and I am looking forward to reading it - I've heard good things about it.

I am sending this in tomorrow's post to Aisling78. She and I had some missed connections due to PMs that didn't get through but we've made contact and all is well.

I enjoyed this book very much. Bill Bryson presents a nice mix of informative tidbits about a wide variety of subjects from bears to the history of the Appalachian Trail to hypothermia. He mixes in a hilarious perspective on his experiences hiking the Appalachian Trail - strange characters, arcane gear, misleading maps, difficult weather conditions, and all.

When I first moved to New York state, I spent a number of weekends hiking parts of the trail with a friend. We covered the trail from the Hudson river to the eastern border of NY in a series of day trips. So I particularly enjoyed doing a bit of reading about it.

My husband (who is a city boy, not an outdoor person) picked up and enjoyed this book also, while I was trying to get an address. Thanks for sharing it!

I'm sorry I've had this book fro so long. Unfortunately, the book ahead of it was "Cold Mountain," which I really had to slow down and savor what I read. Once I got to "A Walk in the woods" I was able to finish it over the weekend. (And this was exactly the book I needed after completing "Cold Mountain"!).

This was such a fun book to read -- part travel guide, part memoir, part comedic, part informative...I didn't want to have to put it down! Bryson's writing reminds me a bit of humor columnist Dave Barry, whom I enjoy. But at the same time, this very funny book is filled from cover to cover with facts -- about the history of the Appalachian trail; various states, trails, towns and mountains it crosses; about the geological beginnings of the Appalachian Mountain range; and about the state of our environment, our government, and our society in general.

Bryson inspired me to consider attempting to hike a small portion of the trail someday, if only for one weekend.

I'm going to PM the next in line, and have this book on it's way as soon as I get a response. Thank you for sharing, gomboggit. I completely enjoyed it!

Thank you so much for sharing this book! I thoroughly enjoyed it and it definitely ranks up there as one of my top Bill Bryson books. My favorite parts were when he traveled around with Katz - Katz always added an extra element of uncertainty and fun. I loved going on this journey with the two of them and find myself interested in ambling around the Appalachians myself. I don't live too far from the Shenandoah portion of the AT so maybe I'll make a short trip of it. Bryson is always great too, as he was here, with sharing interesting factoids and background information on each place.

I'm going to send this off this week once I get in touch with next in line. Thanks again for sharing! (on a sidenote, I have a Bill Bryson bookring if anyone is interested for his book on Australia - "In a Sunburned Country"). It's currently traveling around but I wouldn't mind adding you to the list!

Late posting the arrival of this one with all the holiday activity. So far a good read. Hiking the AT is one of those far off dreams of mine. This is the first Bill Bryson I've read and I like his light-hearted, off on a tangent, style of writing. Will be done soon and off to the next.
