I love how Philip Pullman draws you right into the action. He makes his other world come alive and seamlessly absorbs explanations into the plot, which is wonderful. This book seems like more of an intro to something bigger rather than just a stand-alone story, and you definitely have to have read His Dark Materials to understand what's going on. The map, postcard, and other tidbits are intriguing and heighten the feeling of anticipation for whatever's coming next. Amazon describes it as "tanatalizing" and I think that's very appropriate!

OK, I checked it out. Lyra's Oxford is a bridge to an upcoming, longer book related to His Dark Materials, called The Book of Dust. Oooh...

I just now found this on my doorstep. I'll read it fast and pass it on to the next stop on the bookring :-)

This book is a pure pleasure to read. I curled up for an hour or so, with a cat perched on my knees (and occasionally batting at the raffia on beatrice-s's bookmark), and was pulled right into the story. The characters and story are, of course, wonderful ... I enjoyed His Dark Materials. This story feels almost like a flirt; it's whet my appetite for whatever new series he is promising :-)

The book itself, as physical artefact, is delightful. I enjoy books with fold-out, interactive bits, and they are used to good effect here, to enhance the reality of Pullman's universe.

Thanks for a nice experience, beatrice-s!

This was in my mailbox when I got home today -it's a lovely looking little book and the postcard and bookmark are beautiful also.
I am looking forward to reading this, I am sure I will love it, being a great Pullman fan.

Another great little story from Pullman, I read it in front of the fire this afternoon and was hooked from the first word. Such and interesting book with its added map and other snippets. I am half tempted to buy myself a copy to go with my other Dark Materials books.
Thanks for sharing it Beatrice-S.
Will get it posted as soon as I have an address.

A beautiful little book, and I haven't even started reading it yet! Lots of goodies tucked inside the pages...

Journal Entry 12 by Gooby from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Wednesday, September 22, 2004
Great little book, and what a teaser... I get the feeling we're off to new places soon! However the line at the start, something along the lines of some things mean something and others are just filler, has me trying to pick out what leads us on Lyra's next adventure, and what is just red herring.

I particulularly loved the "additional" bits - the Roman boat sunk in the Oxford canal, the books offered for sale by the map company. Am I stretching things too much to hope that the name Trelawny might be a nod to another writer of youthful fantasy?

Thanks for this, beatrice-s! I'm all aquiver to see what happens next.

I really hate putting rules on my bookrings, but... I'd appreciate it if everyone tried to get this book out within a couple of months of receiving it. It's a short book and doesn't take a long time to read! If you're having problems mailing it onwards, PM me and let me know what's happening and I'll see if I can help you out. Thanks!

I really enjoyed the read and it was a rather short one, once I started. Thanks, beatrice-s, for sharing this. As soon as I have the next adress, this will move on.

Cute story. I love all the little bits like the story of the alchemist and the ads on the map. It made it a bit more interactive. Thanks for letting me read this, I'm looking forward to his new book in that world.

Reserved for the next reader.

Woo hoo! My first bookring book to actually make it back to me! ;)
Thanks everyone for keeping it going, and for all your great comments and reviews! I enjoyed reading everyone's reactions :)

I'm glad everyone had fun with this little tidbit, and I hope that we don't have to wait too much longer for The Book of Dust to make it's appearance!

I may send Lyra out again but for now she and Pan will be taking a break on my real bookshelf :D
