Book Ring anyone? please PM me if you are interested.

This book reminds me of great sci fi/ fantasy classics like the Chrysalids. It did have a bit of a Star Trek ending, if you know what I mean, and has quite a different feel to the other Garth Nix books I have read, but still excellent!

Sorry, picked this up the other day and have only just had a chance to journal it! Thanks, TuesdayNext!

A friend of mine picked it up from the kitchen table (where it's been languishing for the past few days) and read the first few pages and went "ick". But what would he know, he recommended to me one of the worst books I read in 2004. I told him off, at any rate, and told him to track down Sabriel.

Shall start reading this asap!

A good, interesting read. I have to agree with the "Star Trekkiness" of the ending, but that was only a little bit of what was an interesting book. Okay, this bit I'll hide by making the text white as it's got a bit of a spoiler. If you want to read it, just highlight the section and it'll show up. I did find the whole "everything's fine and we've all got textbooks and civilisation and nice clothes after 15 years of being zombies" rather unbelievable at the very end. Somehow, I don't think one can rebuild society quite so well as that! Call me a cynic...

I do like Garth Nix's darkness in his novels, and the way that no one is really good or really bad. (Although the overlords did fall fairly firmly into the BAD category!) Makes for good reading, and I wish I had books like this when I was younger!

Shall pass this onto Mundoo asap!

This book was back in my hands temporarily so that I could have it signed by the author.

Today we went to hear Garth Nix talk & read from Drowned Wednesday, the third in his Keys to the Kingdom series. Thanks to TQD who came with me (I would have been to chicken to go alone) and who thought of bringing this book!

Garth Nix is Australia's answer to Jasper Fforde, JK Rowling & Neil Gaiman rolled into one (also China Mieville - this book). He is a great writer and can put sentences together well (not like me).

I loved this story. This was one of those books that once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. The story was well constructed and had several sub-threads running through it. The circumstances of why the world changed to what it had become and the resistence of the children to that change were well told. Living in their artifical world and surviving in what was a fairly structured environment with laws and morals and hope was very believable.

This book was personally signed by the author and that was a thrill for me as well.

I'm horrified I kept this so long, I just completely forgot I had it! I'm taking it away to the country this weekend, and will post it on promptly upon my return.

What I love about Garth Nix is his originality -- he really doesn't cover old ground. His other series are fantastic, and this was no exception. I thought the characterisation was interesting, particularly the way he didn't offer an outright hero.

I hope nobody minds, but BookCrosser saine (who is my housemate) has joined in, and promises to read the book over the next couple of days, journal and pass it back to me so I can send it on. Thanks so much for sharing, I really enjoyed the read.
