This is the journal I chose to start the "Random Act of Kindness Journal Ring". The cover has a beautiful piece of The Book of Kells on it and, as the book title says, it has a handstitched Coptic binding. All in all, it's a lovely journal for a lovely purpose.
Make sure to check back here when you're ready to send the journal on in case any changes have been made to the list. Always PM and ask the next person on the list if they are still interested AND are able to complete the journal in the alloted time (even if you already have their address). Anyone with any questions or concerns, please PM me. This is my first "ring" so I'm new to it and may have made some errors in the planning process. Let's cross our fingers and hope not. Here is the list. The name in BOLD SCRIPT is the one that, currently, has the journal.

This journal is beginning it's 'ring around the world', today. The first recipient is Antof9, in Colorado.
I'm so excited I could burst. I'm putting a "no stall" vibe on it before I seal it in the envelope because I'd be devastated if it didn't make it back to me.

DANGIT, SpedBug! You should have sent this with a *tissue alert*! On my way home from sending a ring book to Deenbat and working out, I called Unk (with appropriate hands-free device for my phone, of course). He told me I had a huge box ("of books!" I said), and a priority mail package . . . I interrupted here and said "from my friend SpedBug?!" Yes, he replied. Why does he always sound like he thinks I'm certifiable when talking about BookCrossing friends?
I run in the house, and it's all I can do to take the time to make my shake, 'cause I have now SEEN the package by the front door! I make it in record time, grab the package and the box (it's big, by the way), and run upstairs (being careful not to spill my shake).
I open it, and oh, the cover is truly beautiful! I can't even begin to describe it. The picture posted is only half as pretty. It's like a beautiful Turkish Kilim combined with some cathedral windows and Celtic symbols. GREAT pick, SpedBug! This, like any good book, is a joy just to look at and hold.
Then I open the book itself. Of course, there's some requisite SpedBug calligraphy :) SpedBug has very clearly laid out the rules. Makes sense, and I'm now ready to do my Random Act. Then I turn the page and read hers. And oh, it's a great story. And, oh, I need some Puffs Plus! My eyes have welled up and spilled over. What a great reminder that 10 minutes of my own time could significantly alter the course of someone else's day, week, year, life. I'm not exaggerating. But you'll have to wait your turn to find out what she did :)
SpedBug -- you are truly sweet inside and out, and I love you. Thanks for starting this journal. What a great way to remind ourselves how much we have and how much we can be thankful for.

Wow -- what to say? Time has passed, and life hasn't been dull.
In the journal, I briefly chronicle my sad tale of woe as I attempted RAoKs over the last couple weeks. It's really quite humorous that I actually had a hard time doing one!
BUT, serendipity of serendipity, the RAoK Fairy had a plan. First, I had to be stuck at 399 books registered for a time. Then, miketrollstigen had to notice I was at 399 and start this thread. Then mojosmom had to have a great suggestion for making my 400th book a "themed" book. And THEN, I had to go to the bookstore!
Unfortunately, I didn't find either of the books she suggested. But what I did find was this book. I promptly bought 2. One for releasing and one for ringing (blatant attempt to plug my own ring, right here in the middle of my journal entry!).
Anyway, it was on the way out of the bookstore that I got to perform my actual, for-the-record, Random Act of Kindness.
SpedBug -- thanks thanks thanks for this idea, and thanks for letting me participate. The funny thing is? The whole time I was trying to come up with "R", the "K" was doing a preponderance of work. I let people cut in front of me in traffic, and offered to let someone with 1 item go in front of my full grocery cart at the grocery store, and I was nicer to Unk, and nicer to store clerks. All in all, not a bad day's work, Sped!
Something fun about my "400th registered" release? SpedBug actually saw it hit the side bar! Coincidence? I think not!
Now (finally) off on its journey! But first, and only because I promised I would do it (HOW do I get myself into these things?), something SpedBug asked me to do in a recent PM:
"If you want to set it down and do a little 'may quick and painless opportunities for random acts of kindness come your way' dance around it. . . . " I'll be doing the dance at midnight. BX time, of course.

YAY. I get back from vacation and what is sitting in my room waiting for me but the much-anticipated RAoK journal, coming from Antof9. She's right - the book is GORGEOUS. I cannot wait to perform my random act of kindness and send it on! Note to all future readers: you're in for a treat!!!
Hooray! I got my RAoK completed (it felt wonderful!), journalled, and the journal is now travelling across the country to faramir10 in Texas. (I hope she's still alive when the journal arrives; how do Texans keep from burning up? I cannot IMAGINE Texas in August. Blech.)
Note - I added a little surprise into the forlornly empty back pocket of the journal; be sure to take a glimpse! I hereby vote that all who feel inclined add a little memento of some sort or another to the pocket.
Second Note - No fears; I was sure to perform the special me-sarah "Maythisjournalflyquicklyandun-stoppedlytoitsintendeddestination" dance around the journal before sending it off. Don't worry; it did not involve nakedness or chanting. That I saved for the second dance - "MaytheRAoKfaeryblessallwhocomeincontactwiththislovelylittlebook!". Hee hee!
Last Note (I promise!) - SpedBug asked me the following in a PM:

MISSION ACCEPTED! After the dancing etc listed above, I pinned down the RAoK faery that was specially recruited to watch over our journal, and gave her my infamous "Innocent Puppy Eyes" look. She immediately broke down and promised to watch over the journal for all of its days! :-)

Yes, I"m still alive-we learn to tolerate the heat. Actually, it has been unseasonably cool this August. Nice for people-not so nice for cotton. I got the book the morning that I left town for a week, which is why it took me so long to get this journaled. Sorry, Spedbug. Then I had to look for something to do. I helped my roommates move in to their college apartment.

Has anyone been in contact with snickarbo (other than cheesygiraffe) in the last month or so?
cheesygiraffe sent her the RAoK journal and got delivery confirmation on 9/16. I've sent her a couple of PMs asking if she is okay but no reply.
Finally, I sent her a snail mail letter to see what was going on. In it, I enclosed a postage-paid priority mail envelope addressed to the next person on the list (lucybrown) in case snickarbo was having hurricane-related money troubles. I have not heard from her and although my letter reached her (delivery confirmation), she has not e-mailed me as I requested.
Is snickarbo in good health? I'm beginning to wonder and would VERY much appreciate if anyone can shed light on the situation. :(

11/8/04 Update: I PMed one of the people on snickarbo's friends list and they told me snickarbo is on vacation. :) I'm so glad to know she's okay (and that the ring will continue, eventually, as well). :)
11/11/04 Update: snickarbo PMed me and said the journal was safe and sound. She wanted to write a little something in it before mailing it out. I did ask her to mail it out in the next couple of days, however, since it's been 'stalled' so long.
11/22/04 Update: I have not heard back from snickarbo since my response to her Nov. 11th e-mail. I had sent her a postage paid, pre-addressed envelope in which to send the journal to lucybrown but when I check the delivery confirmation receipt number, it does not show it's been sent out. I don't know what to do at this point. My understanding is snickarbo experienced a tragedy in her life,about a month ago. Other than sending her an envelope and politely requesting she send the journal on, I don't know what to do. Hounding her certainly wouldn't be kind so, rather than pursue this, I'll consign myself to the possibility that the journal is MIA.

Just received this Saturday, April 9, from SpedBug. I am panicking over the timeframe for this journal. I am not out and about all that much, so I am hoping an opportunity will present itself while I am out running errands next week (I suppose feeding a stray cat doesn't count, does it ?? :) ) I am so enjoying reading the entries in this beautiful book !
I am so happy, I found a great opportunity to do my little bit to brighten a stranger's day today. My RAOK has been journalled in this beautifully bound book, and I will get it on its merry way to jessibud (well within the week-- quite proud of myself here.) This is such a lovely way to make the world a little nicer...a little kinder...a little happier for both the doer and receiver of the RAOK. This stunning work of art arrived on my doorstep today! WOW! is all I can say. The pic here shows the cover art but can't begin to do it justice, it's just that beautiful! I just want to hold it in my hands and caress it, and spend time gazing at its artistry!
I will snuggle down on my couch tonight, under my blanket, wrapped in a couple of warm cats and read my way through it. Hopefully, the opportunity to bestow my own RAoK will present itself one of these days soon! I know I will be inspired from the journal notes in the pages of this lovely book....

Profuse apologies for keeping this so long. I, of all people, know how frustrating this is!!
I have been having a tough time finding a random act to journal but in the interest of getting this book on its way once again, I will journal this one, even though it is not what I had hoped to be remembered for, in the annals of BookCrossing history... ;-)
I recently spent a long weekend visiting my best friend. She moved out to the country last year and we don't get to see one another very often anymore. To make a long story short, my friend is deathly afraid of spiders and one night, just before I went to bed (she was still watching Survivor*!), I went to the bathroom and saw a rather large spider. I just knew she would freak right out if she saw it so I whipped out the Dustbuster (stored in the the closet in the bathroom) and vacuumed it up! Yuk!!
Even though I am not a fan of spiders, myself, and have been known to freak out, too, if they catch me by surprise, I did feel that I was doing her a big favour (especially since her husband is out of town!). I never mentioned it, either, so she still has no idea that I did it, which made me feel even more virtuous. But the more I think about it, the lamer it sounds. I am an animal lover and don't really want to go down in bookcrossing history as having annihilated an insect as my Random Act of Kindness.
In a last grasp at redeeming myself, I did send out 3 rabcks this week, to friends who have been going through rough times lately and could use a smile. And although they will, eventually, know the books are from me, at this point in time, they are still random!
Oh! And I *wung* someone, too and that someone does not know it! :-)
I will contact Serenity Blue and hand her this beautiful journal book in person, hopefully within the next couple of days.

It is sooooooooo beautiful:0) I got it today meeting Jessibud at lunchtime:)I am just about to read what people have put in it. I was going to walk home but was deathly afraid something would happen to this journal. I didn't stop anywhere and meander like I usually do on Friday's. So here I am hoping the something or someone presents themselves to me for a random act of kindness.
Your calligraphy is fabulicious Spedbug and I'm so glad the journal was found again. The next recipient is OttawaBill one of my favourite bc friends. And I don't even have to ask him for his addy as I already know it so it will be a real surprise for this cute teddybear Ottawa friend of mine.

What a wonderful surprise to arrive at my door today. SerenityBlue has sent me surprises before and they never fail to amaze !
It will take me the better part of three weeks just to read the journal entries and entries in the book, much less record a RAoK of my own. But I will try to stick to the deadline.
Too bad retoractive RAoK didn't count. Last week I left a coupon on a computer for the remnant internet hours from one I had bought while in Vancouver so I could check my mail while there. One lamost happened this evening while ottawahb and I were swimming and befreinded an elderly German lady. We later realized we had forgotten to get her telephone number so we could invite her for tea as she has not much company. But she swims there regularly and we will get it at a future date and hosther now and again.
Oh well....I'll justhave to go out inot the world and do some good I guess....LOL. Looking forward to it and to passing laong the journal. I write the next person in line now !
It will take me the better part of three weeks just to read the journal entries and entries in the book, much less record a RAoK of my own. But I will try to stick to the deadline.
Too bad retoractive RAoK didn't count. Last week I left a coupon on a computer for the remnant internet hours from one I had bought while in Vancouver so I could check my mail while there. One lamost happened this evening while ottawahb and I were swimming and befreinded an elderly German lady. We later realized we had forgotten to get her telephone number so we could invite her for tea as she has not much company. But she swims there regularly and we will get it at a future date and hosther now and again.
Oh well....I'll justhave to go out inot the world and do some good I guess....LOL. Looking forward to it and to passing laong the journal. I write the next person in line now !
Ant here, jumping in with her big mouth. I just saw an article for the upcoming BookCrossing Newsletter that I couldn't resist sharing. If you get a minute, check out what an amazingly nice guy ottawabill really is! Sounds to me like that oughta count as a RAoK!
From what I've heard from those who know him or have come in contact with him, ottawabill lives his life as one, big Random Act of Kindness and we could all learn at his sweet, Santa Claus knee!
My personal experience with that sweet guy is I mentioned the fact that I'd like to read "The Silent Miaow" and he PMed me with an offer of his copy. Come to find out that this book is no longer being published so his offer was doubly generous. I just so happened to have ordered the book, already, and didn't need to take him up on his offer but, nonetheless, I think of him every time I see that book on my shelf.
My humble, little journal will certainly benefit from having passed through his hands!

RELEASE NOTES: I've had it three days over the three week limit so of it goes immediately to the UK to wizzbiz. I'll send it by airmail so it is not long getting there !
I've added to the book m first attempt at a pop-up. It isa map of Ottawa that shows where Ottawhb and I live plus some pictures from the city featurng historic building, ballon festival, winter festival, Gay pride festival and the haunted walk (had to owor with what i had on hand or risk delaying the release of the book..lol)

I've just contacted Toadee for his address, he's next in line. Amazing and tragic events over here, we have the G8 meeting in Scotland, Live 8 concerts in London, getting the 2012 Olympics and then tragic events on the London transport system bring everything to a standstill. I've mentioned some things in the journal. RAoKing is so important, keep up the happy work....

Book arrived safley today, a lot og great entries, have added a small entry and will pass it on to billhookbabe today.
Caught this book a few weeks ago from cartref, I thought I had journalled it but I find I have not. Fear not Spedbug, it is safe and in beautiful condition. It took a while to find my extra special deed as, like many here, I am one of those people who do good deeds as often as possible.

This is a sad journal entry for me but one I felt I owed those who were a part of it: The Random Act of Kindness journal has stalled in England. Only one of the PMs I've sent asking if there was a problem and offering postage has netted an answer. That short reply was in the beginning of February, apologizing and stating an intention to mail the journal off "the next day". Having been in contact with IrasCignavojo, the next person in line, I know that the journal hasn't reached him yet so I’m left to assume it was never mailed (as it was never journalled as being sent).
This journal is, for me, more than just a book ring. It's a global good intention, a warm wish glowing in an often cold, dark world. If this were "just a book" I'd sent out to be read and shared, I could easily have let go by now. But, the truth is, it's not "just a book". It's an enthusiastic compilation of hope, personalized by the hands of BookCrossers for whom I've developed affection and respect. It's a book with value beyond the words written in it and it can't be replaced. To think its journey is over before it was halfway through saddens me. It also saddens me to think I won't get to read the entries or see, firsthand, ottawabill's pop up contribution. I'm disappointed for those who put time and effort into it, who put love into it and I'm disappointed for those who might not have a chance to add to it, as promised. Mostly, I'm heartbroken that it may not fufill its destiny. to travel around the world as a small beacon of global goodwill, and return home to a place of honor on my bookshelf.
quizgirl, I hope you'll honor your commitment and continue my ring's journey or at the very least respond, in kind, to the questions I've posed in my PMs to you. While I'm mostly confused and saddened that the ring has stalled with you, I'll admit a part of me is outraged that a piece of my property is being held without reason or explanation. I'd like to think this is all a justifiable misunderstanding but, as the book has been with you four months on the fourteenth, I find it hard to imagine what that reason might be for you holding on to it.
Wow, 5 months in one place, you'd expect a whole abundance of RAoKs. I was really touched by your comments SpedBug, your ability to remain rational and fair and calm are admirable, hope they are characteristics that will be rewarded in kind.

I'm so sorry the journal has stalled. It is such a nice idea. I was wondering why there hasn't been a journal entry for a while. Maybe Quizgirl will decide to start moving it again or at least answer your pm's. Anyway you are a nice,caring person and thank you for your comments. I second everything Whizbiz said.

((Oh, Spedbug)))! I, too, admire your eloquence in this last journal note of yours. As you well know, my own creative journal has suffered the identical fate as this one, also very recently. We both know the joy of sending such a lovely piece of hope out into the world, and the anticipation of waiting and watching as it fills up with the love, talent and goodwill of friends we trust even if we haven't met them yet. Journals such as these are, as you said so well, not *just another book*; they are as unique as each story that grows within their pages; as individual as each bookcrosser whose threads weave together the whole tapestry. A book such as this is simply not replaceable.
Sped, I will hold a special thought in my heart tonight, hoping that your exquisite journal will soon find its way forward, to continue the journey it is meant to take.

I'm adding my public entry (I sent spedbug a PM and then saw all the journal entries, so I felt it OK to jump in too.)
I was very saddened to learn that this lovely journal might not complete its journey. After I received this marvelous compilation of gestures of kindness, my spirits were lighter for days. Reading everyone's entries and looking for an opportunity to perform my own RAOK made me look at the world and everyone around me a bit differently. This book is too special to languish....let's all hope it begins moving again, touching lives and hearts as it travels.
Maybe 'quizgirl's Random Act of Kindness could simply be to pass this volume on to the next participant??

Oh, yay! It's arrived! I know you'll be relieved, Spedbug! I think you northern hemisphere people don't realise how long seamail takes to get to Oz...three months is usual. Have we skipped Starbytes?
I'm very busy preparing for an exhibition, my first since getting back from Asia, but in ten days I have to have everything at the framers so I should get down to a little decoration inspired by ottawabill (gorgeous stuff!)As for RAOKs I am presently learning to inject my neighbour's dog with insulin so I can do it while she's on holidays (arrgghh!)...it's not random though so I am hoping for serendipitous moments in the near future.
This book looks so good I have to sit down now and read through it all; on the way home from the Post Office I actually dipped into Ottawabill's double spread at a traffic light!

I've contacted islandmomma and she's waiting for her post office to settle down after some difficulties with the post. She wants to make sure things are right for the safe passage of the journal. It'll soon be on its way, Speddie!
It arrived a couple of days ago, and oh, my heavens what a lovely book this is--both physically and in spirit. I have browsed some of the acts of kindness perpetrated by my fellow bookcrossers, and this evening I plan to sit down and read them all in succession. I shall keep my eyes peeled in the coming days for my chance to spring an act of kindness on some unsuspecting person.

At the Charleston, SC Book Crossing Convention, Emperor-Fool reunited me with my baby after our years-long separation. I'm still stunned that it's back with me and can hardly believe my good fortune. I haven't been able to go through it yet because my attention is too divided at present. Come mid-June or so, I'll have a bit more time (and a lot less on my mind). Then I'll sort through all the entries and all the gifties(!!) tucked inside the back cover.
My sincerest "thank yous" to all who participated. Thank you to those who tucked something in the back of it. Thank you to E-F for delivering my baby to me.
