10 out of 10

A great manga from Tokyopop with plenty of quirkiness and glam fashion! I really enjoyed this series (read the other 4 on a bookring by aquarius29!). This one is up for trade.

10 out of 10

The book arrived today, and I read it straight away! Thank you lightwavz for sending Paradise Kiss to me, it was the first manga I really loved! I was already starting to think that maybe manga isn't for me, but then this came along! :) I'm going to buy the whole series for my personal collection.

From the back cover:
"For once there was an unknown land, full of strange flowers and subtle perfumes, a land of which it is joy of all joys to dream, a land where all things are perfect and poisonous."
-Velvet Goldmine

"The last thing Yukari wants to do is stand out. So when she met the punk with the piercings and the stately drag queen while walking home from school one day, she wanted nothing to do with them. But curiosity and fate are working against the young preppie as she finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into the high-fashion wonderland of Paradise Kiss. Yukari has just the look that the eccentric fashion troupe wants in their new model, and their mysterious leader, George, always gets what he wants."

What separated Paradise Kiss from the other manga that I've read, are the characters. The main character Yukari is a pretty standard character, but the author has managed to make even her interesting. But the other characters, oh wow! I totally fell in love with Isabella when she first appeared. She's absolutely gorgeous, and Yukari is never sure if she's really a man or a woman. Arashi is very punk with his safety pin piercings and British accent. He uses words like "blimey" and "bloody hell", kinda like a certain sexy blonde vampire in my favorite tv series... Miwako is so cute and girly that you want to squeeze her. And last but not least, George, with his blue hair and Velvet Golmine obsession (which, btw is one of my favorite movies!) is just incredible! He is very sexy, just like Brian Slade in the movie. With characters like that, how could this be boring?

The story is still pretty basic manga. Yukari goes to prep school because her parents have made it clear that her worth depends on getting into the right university. She's not happy living her life according to other people's wishes, but on the other hand she has no idea what she would like to do if she could choose freely. Meeting the Paradise Kiss gang makes her question her choices, when she sees how they are living their dream. Then, there's of course the romance, without which no manga aimed at girls would be complete...

More info on Paradise Kiss can be found at the Tokyo Pop website, or at Nippori Station and Beads&Lace. To read a preview, go to Nippori Station, choose Manga from the menu and scroll down to the bottom of the page.

(Still haven't heard from eisisa, Tku, so I've sent this to zayah, Jkl.)

I read this on train on my way to work and enjoyed it a lot. This was my first "proper" meeting with manga and I definitely want to read the next issues of this series as well. Since I had nothing to compare this to, I've rated my experience as a nice 8. :)

Ah, read this now. Nice teen manga :) The artwork was very beautiful, and the story was nice as well. I'm more into differend kind of stories, but this was enjoyable. The dresses were gorgeous, as were the men ;)

I'm sending this to eisisa now.

This was the first ever manga book I've read. Paradise Kiss was okay, but I probably won't be actively searching for more manga to read. The actual stroy wasn't very interesting, but I liked the characters. And yes, the men looked gorgeous. There was only one character that I didn't like, and that was Miwako. She is just so cutesy and big-eyed and talking of herself in the third person and... argh! If Paradise Kiss were an animated series, I bet she would have that high-pitched and childish voice that is very annoying. (Or annoying to me, anyway.)

It's difficult to rate Paradise Kiss, because I don't know how this compares to other manga books... but let's say 6-7 stars out of 10.

Thanks for starting this ring, CandyDarling!
The book is now on its way to katayoun.

ok i'm sure you're not going to believe it, but it's here!! amazing, will read and pass to airyaa pretty soon and yeah i do have 2 more books before this but you can cheat with manga, right? thanks candydarling and thanks myntti.

ok, i love manga and i also totally don't understand them, i think that's half the reason that i like it so much. i can't understand the reactions, the reason why they do stuff and a whole lot of less, probably some of it got to do with japanese culture, different and fascinating, thanks CandyDarling. the book is ready to go to airyaa, either she's coming here to get it OR i'll give this to her at the end of the week on my way to my mom's.

sorry for the delay, the good news is that i was finally able to get to airyaa and give her the book. the excuse that i was so late was that we had snow! well not that we don't have snow in winter BUT this was a crazy one, the same one the swept through europe couple of weeks ago and so airyaa being where she is (WOW, you should see the view!!) our little was stuck the 2 times we tried to get there, the third time was the charm and the book's with her.
thanks again CandyDarling for this ring, i love mangas and i find them sooo strange, half the time i never understand why :)

As I love manga, I read it in one sit... the story wasn't so interesting but I just fell in love with the drawings.
I got the address of Mokona so it'll be headed to US this week.

OMG, I apologize - I thought I had journaled this as arrived already. The good news is I have already finished it. I liked the story and it reminded me of M.A.R.S. which is another series I really like. But I really had problems with how different Yukari was drawn. I like the more detailed drawings than the simplistic wide-mouthed look. I don't know how to describe it, but hopefully those who have already read this will know what I mean. It was really distracting to me.

Anyway, I will get this mailed back out soon! Thanks for sharing this!

Well, I've been keeping this for awhile already... I had a bit of hard time to get into manga, but I think I started with wrong books. By now, I've read some that I liked a lot and this one definitely belonged to that category. I really liked the way Yukari was drawn. The one thing that bothered me a bit is Miwako. I don't really like the way she's drawn and it bothers me a bit the way she refers to herself in third person. But it's a minor detail. I definitely want to read the rest of the series.

Thanks CandyDarling for sharing this!

Wow! What a well-travelled book! I picked it up at the "book buffet" at our All-Finland meeting in Tampere yesterday. I have never read any manga, and feel that this needs remedying. So I snapped this up as soon as I saw it. :)

Here's a question, though - we're supposed to put our bookcrossing labels inside the front cover... but on manga does that mean the front cover or the back cover? ;) I see that lightwavz has put the BCID in both places on this copy - a good solution!

4 out of 10

I'm afraid you'll have to mark me down as not being a manga fan. This was the first manga I've read, and I don't think I'll be looking for more. It was fun having to read "backwards", from right to left, and the large, carefully drawn pictures were pretty, sometimes even beautiful.

But I thought the small drawings (the ones lacking detail, looking childishly simplistic) were awful! And I couldn't understand what emotion was supposed to be represented by the huge blank laughing mouth, the blushing face, and the drops of sweat. I guess it must be embarrassment, but there's obviously a huge cultural gap because it didn't look right to me, and not all the occasions for it seemed convincing (for example, "Oh no! I'm late!" ??). The worst was when the drop was drawn above the face, looking like a devil's horn or something. And the second-worst was when the profile showed the mouth (tongue?) hanging out below the chin! Yuck.

I remember as a young teenager getting really angry with romance novels (written for grown-ups) in which the meek woman got trampled all over by a man who then explained at the end of the book that she had misunderstood him and that he loved her. I hated the fact that he always got to be right, and that even though it was *clear* that he had mistreated her, we were supposed to agree that she was the one who was wrong. It was her own fault that she misunderstood, she was the one who was being selfish or silly, and he was the perfect man for her after all.

I find it depressing that women authors are still selling the same characters to young women in the year 2000. That George can say, "Oh! Did you want your passbook?" (Duh! Of course she wants it! It belongs to her, you idiot!) "If you want it, then come and get it." She has to get into a car with someone she's never even met, to go get the passbook... Then it turns out he had it with him all along, and he says, "It's your fault for being so easily duped."

I'd like to suggest that this manga could have been improved by having Caroline stab George (almost fatally) with a pair of sewing shears. (Evil grin - which would look a lot like the embarrassed face, actually.)

I tried offering this on the bookobsessed.com website, as part of a Virtual Book Box, but there were no takers. Instead I'll make plans to release it into the wild. I do so love the idea that when we suggest, "Go on-line to see where this book has been" it's nicer if the book is not one we just registered to release :) but has really been around, like this one!
