From the back cover: "For once there was an unknown land, full of strange flowers and subtle perfumes, a land of which it is joy of all joys to dream, a land where all things are perfect and poisonous." -Velvet Goldmine "The last thing Yukari wants to do is stand out. So when she met the punk with the piercings and the stately drag queen while walking home from school one day, she wanted nothing to do with them. But curiosity and fate are working against the young preppie as she finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into the high-fashion wonderland of Paradise Kiss. Yukari has just the look that the eccentric fashion troupe wants in their new model, and their mysterious leader, George, always gets what he wants." What separated Paradise Kiss from the other manga that I've read, are the characters. The main character Yukari is a pretty standard character, but the author has managed to make even her interesting. But the other characters, oh wow! I totally fell in love with Isabella when she first appeared. She's absolutely gorgeous, and Yukari is never sure if she's really a man or a woman. Arashi is very punk with his safety pin piercings and British accent. He uses words like "blimey" and "bloody hell", kinda like a certain sexy blonde vampire in my favorite tv series... Miwako is so cute and girly that you want to squeeze her. And last but not least, George, with his blue hair and Velvet Golmine obsession (which, btw is one of my favorite movies!) is just incredible! He is very sexy, just like Brian Slade in the movie. With characters like that, how could this be boring? The story is still pretty basic manga. Yukari goes to prep school because her parents have made it clear that her worth depends on getting into the right university. She's not happy living her life according to other people's wishes, but on the other hand she has no idea what she would like to do if she could choose freely. Meeting the Paradise Kiss gang makes her question her choices, when she sees how they are living their dream. Then, there's of course the romance, without which no manga aimed at girls would be complete... More info on Paradise Kiss can be found at the Tokyo Pop website, or at Nippori Station and Beads&Lace. Here's a question, though - we're supposed to put our bookcrossing labels inside the front cover... but on manga does that mean the front cover or the back cover? ;) I see that lightwavz has put the BCID in both places on this copy - a good solution! |

But I thought the small drawings (the ones lacking detail, looking childishly simplistic) were awful! And I couldn't understand what emotion was supposed to be represented by the huge blank laughing mouth, the blushing face, and the drops of sweat. I guess it must be embarrassment, but there's obviously a huge cultural gap because it didn't look right to me, and not all the occasions for it seemed convincing (for example, "Oh no! I'm late!" ??). The worst was when the drop was drawn above the face, looking like a devil's horn or something. And the second-worst was when the profile showed the mouth (tongue?) hanging out below the chin! Yuck. I remember as a young teenager getting really angry with romance novels (written for grown-ups) in which the meek woman got trampled all over by a man who then explained at the end of the book that she had misunderstood him and that he loved her. I hated the fact that he always got to be right, and that even though it was *clear* that he had mistreated her, we were supposed to agree that she was the one who was wrong. It was her own fault that she misunderstood, she was the one who was being selfish or silly, and he was the perfect man for her after all. I find it depressing that women authors are still selling the same characters to young women in the year 2000. That George can say, "Oh! Did you want your passbook?" (Duh! Of course she wants it! It belongs to her, you idiot!) "If you want it, then come and get it." She has to get into a car with someone she's never even met, to go get the passbook... Then it turns out he had it with him all along, and he says, "It's your fault for being so easily duped." I'd like to suggest that this manga could have been improved by having Caroline stab George (almost fatally) with a pair of sewing shears. (Evil grin - which would look a lot like the embarrassed face, actually.) |
