Book Description
Alice Hoffman’s most magical novel to date?three generations of extraordinary women are driven to unite in crisis and discover the rewards of reconciliation and love.

Women of the Sparrow family have unusual gifts. Elinor can detect falsehood. Her daughter, Jenny, can see people’s dreams when they sleep. Granddaughter Stella has a mental window on the future—a future that she might not want to see.

In The Probable Future this vivid and intriguing cast of characters confronts a haunting past—and a very current murder—against the evocative backdrop of small-town New England. By turns chilling and enchanting, The Probable Future chronicles the Sparrows’s legacy as young Stella struggles to cope with her disturbing clairvoyance. Her potential to ruin or redeem becomes unbearable when one of her premonitions puts her father in jail, wrongly accused of homicide. Yet this ordeal also leads Stella to the grandmother she was forbidden to meet and to a historic family home full of talismans from her ancestors.

Poignant, arresting, unsettling, The Probable Future showcases the lavish literary gifts that have made Alice Hoffman one of America’s most treasured writers.

4 out of 10

It was interesting the way a little bit of supernatural is thrown in, but not the main point of the story -- seems vaguely magical realist, but in a more understated way.

It was an enjoyable story with a satisfying ending -- but a few too many references to lake water and peach stones.

I chose this book to read because my mother absolutely loves this author and is always telling me how great she is, so I thought I should check this out. I liked it ok, but probably won't seek out more...

Thanks so much for sharing the book. I was glad for the opportunity to read it through BookCrossing.

Mailed Saturday to Athomegoddess.

7 out of 10

I really enjoyed this book. I've read several several other books by Alice Hoffman, and she never disappoints.

I too found some of the referrances to rain/water and other elements rather tedious, but they served to paint a finer picture of the town and that the whole atmosphere was almost mystical.

The main story line, which was the strained relationships of the Sparrow women, was what kept my interest. I love watching/reading a character develop and grow as they find out more about themselves AND the people they are surrounded by. Jenny, Stella and Elinor all become better women for looking outside of themselves and trying to soften their hardness.

I'll be sending this out to the next on the list this week!

I enjoyed this story (as I do with all of Alice Hoffman's books). I have to agree with Nillabreen that there were too many references to lake water, peach pits, frogs, bees, etc! Mailed to sunlightbub on October 1, 2005 via surface mail (takes 4-6 weeks).
