8 out of 10

This is a book that made me think about the described situation in Mexico and wonder if it truelly existed once - Catholocism is considered as something sinful, for example because priests ask money for their prayers and baptisms etc. instead of giving food to the needy. The story narrates the flight and near escape of the last priest, hunted like game by the police and rejected by the population, because it's a crime to help him and they risk getting shot.

Greene starts by painting an image of Mexico and its habitants, foreigners and locals, the heat, the vultures waiting for death and finally the priest, who is considered a bad priest, because he drinks (he is called the whisky priest) and even has conceived a child. His inner torments sway between being a priest who is afraid of nothing and a normal human being, very very frightened and longing for peace and quite.

All in all, I think Graham Greene is a very good writer and apparently this is one of his classics (which I didn't know). I hope the next reader (who ever that may be) will enjoy it as well!
