Looks great . . . now to plan a road trip so I can drive at night and listen . . . nothing better for a tale of unspeakable terror, as the binding advertises!!
As a kid, I read a lot of horror novels . . . gave 'em up (except for King and Koontz) as a teenager for reasons that this book brought right to the forefront of my mind. This genre often features kids, usually girls, who are abused in life and find what they think is relief from a supernatural source, only usually, that just ends up being more, worse abuse. This story is no different.
Roundtree, MA is a typical small New England town, with an old haunted house, complete with witch stories and live in ghosts, an historic cemetary (where the mysterious round tree the town is named for grows) and a modern high school full of kids both weak and strong. The action begins when Angel and her family move into the infamous house at Black Creek crossing. angel is def one of the weak ones, and she hopes for better in her new school. Like chickens, though, kids can sense the weaker members of their society and will peck their feathers off. Soon the ghosts have reached out to Angel and her only friend, Roundtree's other weak and friendless kid, Sean, and have drawn them into a centuries old quest for revenge. angel and Sean discover the ghosts and the witches secrets and turn their weaknesses into strengths temporarilily. Though the kids revenge their mistreatment by supernatural manipulations of the bullies, their powers soon run amuck and they suffer more . . . this time perhaps forever.
If you like this sort of book, you will like this book. I did like it, though I still feel the same way . . . I won't seek out horror except occasionally.

Received in the mail from suebo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Read by Dick Hill, 2004. Unabridged on 9 CDs; approximately 10 hours.
From AudioFile
Thirteen-year-old Angel Sullivan and her troubled parents move to a small town in Massachusetts. The house they move into has a tumultuous past, which manifests itself as ghostly apparitions that affect the lives of Angel, her family, and her new friends. The story is as much about teenaged outcasts and the horrors of sexual abuse as it is about ghosts. Dick Hill portrays a realistic Angel while adding tension to the horrifying ghost scenes. All in all, this is a very satisfying ghost story with much to say about being a teen.
From the back of the box
Thirteen-year-old Angel Sullivan falls in love with her family's new home - the house that stands at Black Creek Crossing in the small town of Roundtree, Massachusetts. But the idyll is soon shattered as Angel learns a shocking secret about the house. It seems that a double murder took place there, and no one has lived at Black Creek Crossing since. As Angel and her family begin to confront the mounting perils in their new dwelling, increasingly bizarre events occur in Roundtree: terrible storms strike; seemingly inexplicable "accidents" transpire; and rumors of witchcraft, a phenomenon that figured in the town's history hundreds of years earlier, begin to resurface..."
From the publisher
The dark history and dire secrets of a peaceful small town are summoned from the shadows of the past. Unholy forces are stirred from long slumber to monstrous new life. And two young misfits discover the chilling art of turning persecution into retribution. With these eerie ingredients, bestselling master John Saul once again works his unique brand of sinister magic to conjure an unforgettable tale of unspeakable terror.
For most of her young life, thirteen-year-old Angel Sullivan has been on the outside looking in, enduring the taunts of cruel schoolmates and the angry abuse of a bitter father. Then Angel's family moves to the quaint town of Roundtree, Massachusetts -- where a charming home is available, a promising job awaits Angel's unemployed father, and most of all, the chance to make a new start beckons to the shy, hopeful teenager. But when she is shunned by her new classmates, Angel falls deeper into despair. Until she meets Seth Baker, a fellow outcast -- and a fateful kinship is forged.
It's Seth who tells Angel the unspoken truth about the legacy of murder that hangs over her family's home -- and the whispered rumors that something supernatural still dwells there. Uncertain whether the stories are true, and desperate to escape the torment of their daily lives, Angel and Seth devote themselves to contacting whatever restless soul haunts the dark recesses of Black Creek Crossing. But once they have begun, there is no turning back.
Guided by an anguished and vengeful spirit, they uncover the shocking events and centuries-old horrors that lay buried beneath the placid veneer of Roundtree. And along with the ghastly revelations comes a terrifying power -- one that feeds upon the rage of the victimized, turning the basest impulses and most dangerous desires into devastating weapons. Now, the closer Angel and Seth are pushed toward the edge by their tormentors, the deeper they descend into the maelstrom of dark forces they've unleashed . . . and the more unspeakable the hour of reckoning will be.

Whoops, forgot to journal this before sending on to LMD. Dick Hill does a good New England accent, but his female & teen voices are whiny and he overemotes. Still, it was fun to listen to a John Saul story after having read so many. (They used to be my guilty pleasure.)

This wasn't too bad. I think I was a tad disappointed cause I had just finished Angels and Demons and this wasn't the same. Still a good story.

Picked this up Sat. AM at the post office...Thanks!
I was entertained by this book, but I wasn't impressed with the narration. The narrator was over the top with his drama.
The story did keep me going…The story wasn’t fantastic, but it was compelling enough for me to listen to it during walks with my dog and while in the car.

Thanks for the story!
I just got this today from the post office. I was on vacation. I will get it done as soon as possible.
I finally finished listening to this. Sorry it took so long. It was pretty good and I appreciated getting to listen. I will be sending this off today to Firegirl.
EGADS! This book little audiobook was hidden away in the "arrived packages" closet of my apartment complex. Somehow it got overlooked all the times I've come in there and had them give me my packages! It was finally unearthed the other day when they were doing some cleaning -- they were very sheepish about turning it over to me, I think they feel pretty awful for having it in there so long!
I was able to listen to it this week while at work and will be sending it back to Suebo ASAP. I enjoyed the story, but the narrator absolutely drove me batty. WAAAAAAAAAAAY too over the top with all the "dramatic" readings! I've made a note of his name so I know to avoid anything narrated by him in the future.
Thanks for the ring, Suebo, and I'm so sorry this book was MIA for so long!
