This book is actually historical fiction, based on true events and people, but fictionalized. It was about the first and only Black female unit to serve overseas during WWII. It was a part of history I knew nothing about and for that reason alone I wanted to read it. I also wanted to like it more than I did. The author is supposed to be an award-winning journalist but in truth, I found the narrative sometimes clunky, sometimes a bit contrived. The author's note at the end was interesting and shed more light on the story itself. It was based on true events and even 2 real people, though the way Sanders changed facts seemed odd, to me. Still, it was worth reading.
It's good to see how many "secret" stories of the important work done by black women have come to light. "Hidden Figures" comes to mind, upon which a terrific movie was made. Another story I liked was "The Help" - also made into a great movie. This book is about black American women who joined the W.A.C. (Women's Army Core) during WW2. Hmmmm...that reminds me...the novel "Small Island" is a very good read about black soldiers and other West Indians who decide to move to the U.K. after WW2, leaving behind the W.I. where there is little chance for advancement. Author: the late Andrea Levy.
