In 1886 a shy, middle-aged piano tuner named Edgar Drake receives an unusual commission from the British War Office: to travel to the remote jungles of northeast Burma and there repair a rare piano belonging to an eccentric army surgeon who has proven mysteriously indispensable to the imperial design. From this irresistible beginning, The Piano Tuner launches its protagonist into a world of seductive loveliness and nightmarish intrigue. And as he follows Drake's journey, Mason dazzles readers with his erudition, moves them with his vibrantly rendered characters, and enmeshes them in the unbreakable spell of his storytelling.

It’s a very strange book and I don’t know how to rate it. It’s a very good lecture and the history is very mysterious . When I started the lecture I just wanted to read it until the end. But when I get the end … you must read to understand!

Really enjoyed reading the book - it didn't have something special - was just enjoyable to read. Myanmar (Burma) has been for many years one of my preferred countries - and although the book didn't describe too much of the nature it was just nice to read the book and imagine...
(Pmed the next BCer already to get the book on its way as soon as possible)

p.310: My men went on and presently met the Lotus-Eaters nor did these Lotus-Eaters have any thoughts of destroying our companions, but they only gave them lotus to taste of. But any of them who ate the honey-sweet fruit of lotus was unwilling to take any message back, or to go away, but they wanted to stay there with the lotus-eating people, feeding on lotus, and forget the way home.

Beautiful, exotic story about falling in love with a country and its people. Very rich in detail and in atmosphere. A bit too slow-paced sometimes. Nice plot turn in the end.

Thanks for ringing this book, Marc3l! I will PM Brujula for her address.

What a novel! I admit it took me some time and effort to dive into the story, but when I finally managed it, I couldn't stop reading. Finishing it felt like waking up from the middle of a dream.

The parts I liked best: Where Edgar Drake, the piano tuner, explains about the history of the Érard Grand and about tuning in general as well as when it comes to the special treatment he uses for Érards and, finally, for the piano by the river. It brought me to open once again the lid of my own instrument... and today, to visit the collection of historical keyboards in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg. Unfortunately they don't have an Érard piano, but there are some models explaining piano mechanics – with model no. 3 presenting an original sample of one of Érard's core achievements, the "double escapement".

Thank you very much for this BookRing!

The book will travel on to Romania, as soon as I have the address.
