This is a terrifying look at the future and is similar to The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood in that women's reproductive rights are taken away from her and decided for her by a 'government' disguised as a lottery system that decides if she becomes a 'breeder' or a 'bleeder' on the day her period starts. It's toted as a right of passage and young girls go through hardship and terrifying ordeals to take their place in society that was chosen for them.
In this novel, we see both sides of the coin - how having choice taken away from us tears us down and how having no choice can be liberating.
