The Caterer

Meet Goldy Bear: a bright, opinionated, wildly inventive caterer whose personal life has become a recipe for disaster. She's got an abusive ex-husband who's into making tasteless threats, a rash of mounting bills that are taking a huge bite out of her budget, and two enticing men knocking on her door.

The Dish

Now determined to take control of her life, Goldy moves her business and her son to ritzy Aspen Meadow Country Club, where she accepts a job as a live-in cook. But just as she's beginning to think she's got it made--catering decadent dinners and posh society picnics and enjoying the favors of Philip Miller, a handsome local shrink, and Tom Shulz, her more-than-friendly neighborhood cop--the dishy doctor inexplicably drives his BMW into an oncoming bus.

The Unsavory Killer

Convinced that Philip's bizarre death was no accident, Goldy decides to do a little investigating of her own. But sifting through the unpalatable secrets of the dead doc's life will toss her into a case seasoned with unexpected danger and even more unexpected revelations--the kind that could get a caterer and the son she loves. . .killed.

An amusing mystery with a culinary twist, the action doesn't really pick up in this book until the final few chapters.

Included periodically in the text are recipes for items that the main character, a caterer, makes for various dinners. If anyone makes any of them, be sure to share how the results taste!

This book was ok... I'm not familiar with Diane Mott Davidson's work, so maybe it's an acquired taste. I didn't expect the ending until just before the reveal, which was good, but I wasn't very sympethic to the main character, which was bad.

There are recipes interspersed with the novel, which I definitely plan on copying before releasing. They look really good.

I'll be sending this out for a trade on Wednesday.

Thanks for the trade! Sorry, I forgot to journal this when it arrived the other week. Looks a bit like someone's dog got to it before I did. ;)

I read this last night, and I couldn't put it down. Not because I enjoyed it all that much, but rather because I couldn't figure it out. I've read a later book in the series, so I was moderately familiar with the characters. Knowing how the relationships eventually develop made the actions of the characters in this book seem out of character and against their personalities at times. The series looks interesting, and all the stuff about food (including recipes!) makes me want to eat something other than my typical frozen dinners and PB&J sandwiches. I'll give it another try, but if the next book I read from the series is as much as a dud as this one, I may give it up entirely.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I think this was when I released the book. In any case, I left it near the newspapers at the entrance when I went out for lunch, and I believe it was gone by the time I returned.
