This is a very strange book with quirky humour, yet it touches metaphysical questions like fate, religion, and the value of good will. If you are capable of taking Dick's play with Sci-Fi cliches to set up this bizarre-brilliant vision of a cruel man-become-god invading mankind through drug addiction, this is your book.

I have recently contributed to grover3d's Top 100 List of favourite books; this was my #3.

To be my first BookRing, starting in Vienna.

First, I must apologise: I've read the book already a while ago, but then it disappeared under mount TBR... I must admit, that I completely forgot it until today, when I tried to rearrange mount TBR...

This book is definitely not easy to read..., but it is well written. It opens a new world to the reader, which - I hope - will never come true...

The book travels on to fannynathalie.

In the overcrowded world and cramped space colonies of the late 21st century, tedium can be endured through the use of the drug Can-D, which enables the user to inhabit a shared illusory world. When industrialist Palmer Eldritch returns from an interstellar trip, he brings with him a new drug, Chew-Z, which is far more potent than Can-D, but threatens to plunge the world into a permanent state of drugged illusion controlled by the mysterious Eldritch. THE THREE STIGMATA OF PALMER ELDRITCH is, by universal consent, one of his three key novels, and the book in which he first took his perennial interest in the fragile nature of reality to a new level of imaginative intensity.

It's definitely not easy to read, but it's one of Dick's absolute classics. I wouldn't like to live in such a dangerous and banal world...
