I read this book when it was first published in 1988, but picked up this copy last weekend at the Salvation Army (50 cents!). The book tells the story of a middle-aged artist, Elaine Risley, who returns to Toronto for a retrospective of her work. There she connects with the ghosts of her past - family, friends and ex-es. What I remember most of all about this book was the vivid descriptions of relationships between elementary school-aged girls, in all their scheming, manipulative nastiness! For this reason, amongst others, this is one of my favourite Atwood novels.
