I bought this over the weekend from a sale table at New Westminster Quay 'cause it looked like a good page-turner. (Left: author John Searles)

Boy Still Missing, American writer John Searles’ debut novel, tells the story of fifteen year old Dominick Pindle, a working class kid in 1970s-era Massachusetts who spends his nights driving around with his mother, dragging his alcoholic father out of bars. There's something oddly unstable about Dominicks's woebegone mother, who "slip[s] from life to life the way some people change jobs". She has a past. But she's all Dominick's got, save his friend Leon Diesel and a photograph of the half-brother he's never met, Truman.

One night while out searching for his father, Dominick is introduced to his father's mistress, Edie Kramer. Instantly attracted, Dominick begins an illicit relationship with Edie, who exploits him for both money and emotional support. To finance the unspoken terms of their arrangement, Dominick "borrows" money from his mother's savings, stashed around the Pindle's apartment. The results are disastrous.

Boy Still Missing brings to life some of the most explosive issues of the 1970s: feminism, the disintegration/transformation of the family, poverty and abortion. The book delivered on its "page turner" promise, but by the last quarter its underlying political message -- however noble -- came close to eclipsing the story itself. This was unfortunate, since the first half of the book was so strong.

8 out of 10

Found the book at a coffee shop on Melville and Thurlow right before Christmas. Got caught up in the engaging story for 2 days. The perfect read for those days when the weather is miserable.

9 out of 10

Loved it, riveting, couldn't put it down. Found it at Mangez Mangez, cafe downtown Vancouver in December 2004.
I finally released it, after much travel through northern Canada and the eastern provinces.

I left it at the Flin Flon, Manitoba airport......
