Found yesterday with several other books and plenty of mail. It probably arrived during my week abroad. goes on TBR hill!

Journal Entry 3 by Brujula from Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France on Thursday, July 15, 2004
I'm really having trouble getting into this book. The language is bothering me, I guess. There's a "fucken" in almost every other sentence. And I don't always understand what it is all about...

I'll give it another try this week-end, and if it's still the same I'll pass it on to Banshee.

Journal Entry 4 by Brujula from Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France on Monday, July 19, 2004
I tried again, got to page 70 or so... and I gave up. I think I'm missing a few things, I really couldn't get in this book.I only manage to read a few pages at a time, it could take me ages to finish it! I think I'll try to read it in a few months, maybe in french or in spanish...

So... I'm mailing it to bookmaniac70 as soon as I have her adress!

Journal Entry 7 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Sunday, September 5, 2004
Just a note that I`m through the half of the bookm already.I expect to finish it these days and shall journal again.

Journal Entry 8 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Wednesday, September 8, 2004
I managed to finish finally this book.It was not easy, though.First,I was a bit taken aback to see the writing was identified as "comic","humorous","joke on every page" and the like.I couldn`t see it comic,or perhaps it is because of some cultural/or language thing. Please tell me,did you find it comic,or it was only me who didn`t get it?

Second, the story didn`t sound very original to me.This is the old theme of the rebel teenager who gets in all kind of trouble only because he is too proud or stupid to try fixing things. He is betrayed by all and everyone, and just when everything seems hopeless, suddenly everything gets right.
Speaking about the plot itself,it did seem to me a bit exaggerated that Vernon was sentenced to death just for bad luck. Also,Taylor`s betrayal was a bit pathetic and theatrical.
Inspite of all of this, the book has some freshness in it,and Vernon is a character which makes himself liked by the reader-there is something symphatetic about him. So it wasn`t so bad as reading, only that I tried really hard to get what it is the story about.

I shall mail the book to next participant ASAP.

This fetched up here today and I shall get to it shortly. I am about 1/3 of the way through The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay which is occupying all my spare reading moments for the moment. But it shan't be long! I promise!!!

Thank you billhookbabe for organizing this ring and Rrrcarron for passing it along to me.

Journal Entry 15 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Saturday, March 12, 2005
I'm having a very hard time getting into this one...the whole story seems so sad to me. A horrible event has just happeneded in this town, and they seem more interested in finding a scapegoat, gossiping about who is on what diet, or making sure their garbage has better labels in it than in healing a ghastly wound. I shall keep trying to read, but find my attitude is very similar to the one I had when reading Catcher in The Rye. I kept hoping for a skilled and compassionate therapist to help out all the characters, not just poor Vernon.

Sigh....back to the book....

Journal Entry 16 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Monday, March 21, 2005
Heavy sigh...I so wanted to like this book, especially before I actually started to read it. But I'm afraid it just wasn't my cup of anything, let alone tea. (But as I said, I disliked Catcher in the Rye, too) I had heard so much hype about it when it came out...oh well. My taste and the judge's panel just don't jive.

Ramya, who is the next person asked to be skipped, so this is off to Megi53.

Journal Entry 17 by Megi53 from Danville, Virginia USA on Friday, March 25, 2005
Came in the mail today. Great postcard, billhookbabe!

I read about 5 pages out of curiousity, and enjoyed the funny Spanish names, like "Mrs. Lechuga" (Mrs. Lettuce).

Journal Entry 18 by Megi53 from Danville, Virginia USA on Monday, April 4, 2005
Whew. What a roller-coaster ride through the final section, "Me Ves y Sufres". I seldom get this excited about a book any more. As Vernon would say, it was Fate that I was listening to Metallica's "Load" while reading, and "Mama Said" came on just as he went to the gurney.

In addition to Fate, Vernon got plenty of "learnings" through the book. No wonder he referred to himself as a man after he turned 16.

Other unforgettable characters are Doris, Vernon's mom, the dreadful villain (it would be a spoiler to name him), and the two girls in Vernon's life.

The cursing bothered me, too, and I considered not reading because of it. I'm glad I continued until the story grabbed me, which didn't take long. On page 204, Vernon announced he was giving up cursing (and he was good to his vow for about 50 pages!).

Mailing to junegirl this afternoon.

Journal Entry 19 by Megi53 from Danville, Virginia USA on Monday, April 4, 2005
I forgot to address bookmaniac70's question about the humor. I thought it was very understated, barely noticeable. Most of it consisted of Spoonerisms like when Vernon kept calling paradigms "power dimes". And - ugh - whatever his mom called Timberland shoes. "Tumbledowns" or something (I've already sealed the mailing envelope; can't check).

Journal Entry 20 by rem_NYJ-974408 on Monday, April 11, 2005
Arrived today. I have no less than 5 rings ahead of this one but will get to it as soon as I am able. Eager to read this -- thanks!

Journal Entry 21 by rem_NYJ-974408 on Friday, September 16, 2005
I am both ashamed and sorry to have held up this ring for so long. I haven't gotten to read this, and don't think I will be able to for some time. So, I am sending this on and hoping I won't be exiled from BC forever for this unpardonable sin. There's really no excuse; I am a slow reader and have too much reading for my job. I work in the local independent bookstore and conduct the store's reading group. I apologize profusely to the ring and, especially, to billhookbabe who was so kind to share in the first place.

I really loved this book. One of the funniest I have ever read with great characters and Vernon himself was a joy! Could be touching as well particularly the final section Me ves y sufres (You see me, and suffer).

Will be sending to shimi next...

Journal Entry 31 by shimi from Nordre Aker bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Saturday, April 28, 2007
I've been trying to pick up this for a while now, but I have not been in the right mood for it (one of the reasons why I usually don't join a lot of bookrings, hehe... my mood for a book must be right, or it's not going to happen). Therefore, this book will travel to its next reader in Greece in a couple of days, as I don't want it to be waiting here with me for too long.

Will update with the accurate date of sending, for the record. :)

EDIT 30/4-07: Sent to Kihli today.

Journal Entry 32 by kihli from Thessaloniki - Θεσσαλονίκη, Thessaloniki Greece on Monday, May 7, 2007
