Information on cover: "Eight deaf girls and their teachers are pulled off a school bus along a windswept Kansas road. They are held hostage in an abandoned slaughterhouse by escaped murderer Lou Handy and two fellow inmates. They threaten to kill one hostage an hour unless their demands are met.
Called to the scene is Arthur Potter, the FBI's senior hostage negotiator, who meets in Lou Handy the toughest adversary of his career. As Potter struggles to outwit Handy, hostage Melanie Charrol takes on the killers in a desperate effort to save her students.
The clock is ticking as a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse begins ..."

One of Jeffery Deaver's outstanding suspense thrillers! (Not part of the Lincoln Rhyme series.)

Wow! This is really a page-turner! Read it last Saturday and finished it at three o'clock in the morning. It is an effective hostage thriller. Every page has another surprising twist. Violent, but intelligent and gripping!

Well, I was wondering why there were so many pages left to read when I thought it was all over... Now I know: Another seriously unexpected trademark Deaver twist was still to come... Very gripping!

This book is really very exciting. I couldn't stop reading, I just had to go on and on. There isn't one page where you can relax a little and catch your breath.

But still - how can I describe it - the story doesn't really touch me that much. It's like in a lot of films. They are full of suspense, but just for the sake of it. The whole situation in this book would be difficult enough without all the different forces working against each other. Why do there have to be so many outside disturbancies, when the situation itself is grave enough?

I think the book would be more fascinating with less action but more insight.

Nevertheless I enjoyed reading it and I'm looking forward to my next Jeffrey Deavers ;-))

Read it almost without putting it down.
Started to be a little frustrated that it just wouldn't come to an end!

Journal Entry 13 by flybabyRT from Reutlingen, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Wednesday, July 21, 2004
Found it in my mailbox today!!! I'm so excited. Seems like it traveled quite some time. Thank you to zazou for sending it and to Kari-H for sharing and organizing this ring. I will start reading tomorrow.

Finally I'm online again and can journal this book. Sorry it took so long. I had a little problems getting into it at first but along the way I started to really like it. I already expected a twist at the end cause I've read lots of Jeffery Deaver books before but the twist in this one really got me. Thanks for Kari-H for organizing the ring. I put in the mail earlier this week and hope it arrived savely.

Received it two days ago. Looks like an easy read that will provide ample entertainment & thrill - which is EXACTLY what I need right now: I've just spent an exhausting week moving and now that I can start to settle down in my new home, I can't wait to snuggle down with this book and a cuppa. :-))

Journal Entry 16 by te-sa from Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Tuesday, September 14, 2004
Got sick (not good), thus had to stay at home and was able to read it in one go (vg!) - though the last pages were consumed with red eyes + the first grey light of dawn creeping in through the blinds. ;-)
What can I say - quite a page-turner! Enjoy!

For Conejita.

Journal Entry 20 by Conejita from Bremen, Bremen Germany on Saturday, October 2, 2004
Received today.

29.07.2006:
Well, the book arrived when I had a lot of bookrings here. I finally read it in the end of last year as buchsuch wasn´t waiting so eagerly for the book. I wasn´t that fast with reading as the others here, but I don´t remember how long it took me to finish with it. Maybe 2 weeks ...
But it was thrilling, though, and most of the time I enjoyed reading it.
Then it turned out that buchsuch has enough to read now and wants to skip this bookring. So finally I decided to take this book to our monthly BC-meetup today.
