Journal Entry 1 by E-mile from Almere, Flevoland Netherlands on Sunday, May 23, 2004

Other cover, but same fantastic book! Anne Robinson always intrigued me: I love "the weakest link" and was curious what gave her that sharp sence of humour..... After reading the book one can think of quite some things that might have caused it. It's a story of a woman, brought up with firm believes in how to live your life by a dominante mother and a good example about a working woman in a man's world. And -as if that's not enough- the story about alcohol and what it can do to both the drinker and her family. I realy loved the book and after reading it respect Anne Robinson even more than I already did: If someone is the strongest link, it's her!! Here's what they said at amazon.com about the book: Book Description Who is Anne Robinson? She's the notorious grand inquisitor of the television sensation The Weakest Link. She's the first woman in nearly half a century to host a prime-time game show. She's the highest-paid female journalist in British history. She warrants fan mail and death threats, fear and loathing, unqualified admiration and unabashed hatred.... But what you don't know about the Host from Hell could fill a book. From pioneering journalist to overnight pop-culture phenomenon, Anne Robinson tells all with the same bar-nothing candor that won her the honor of "rudest woman on TV" (Britain's TVTimes). But now Anne Robinson trains her steely-eyed focus on her own past. With unblinking honesty she shares the events of her formative upbringing by a sensitive father and a driven, hardworking mother who was "part magic, part monster." With unreserved pride she reveals the headline-making battles to carve out her own career as a journalist, a controversial consumer reporter, and a BBC anchor -- a calling that took its toll on a troubled marriage and a sensational, highly publicized custody battle. And with biting humor, Anne Robinson explores what brought her to her latest level of infamy: the autocratic style, withering glance, and stinging lash of the lady in black, landing her in the unique position of being both the most popular and unpopular television personality in history. This is Anne Robinson. Are you game?

While working all alone at home, I heard a big bang coming out of the hallway. The postman had dropped this book in my letter box. I hope I can resist the temptation to start reading immediately, because I still have a lot of work to do, and my boss thinks I'm doing that work right now :-). Thank you E-mile for ringing this book and thank you for the nice postcard inside!

I enjoyed this book a lot. Anne Robinson is an interesting woman, who has a lot to tell. I liked the parts about her youth and her family life most. The parts about managing newspapers and English politics were a bit boring, in my opinion, because she mentions a lot of names who are probably well known in England, but I've never heard of them... Today the book will start it's journey to Wandering.

What an interesting life-story this is! I liked the part about Annes childhood and her mother, I did not like the part about all the liquor- and job-struggles she got through and almost gave up on reading the rest of the book. But when she got over her problems and actually started living her own life the book got more speed, the storie got more interesting somehow. Maybe I just can't relate to people being in trouble so deep. I just don't get how someone can get that far. This book is on its way to Owlet!

Journal Entry 9 by owlet from Maastricht, Limburg Netherlands on Sunday, September 05, 2004
I just finished this book and I must say I don't remember why I signed up for this bookring. None the less, I liked it! I rarely read (auto)biographies, which is probably why I thought I should try one, even though I must say I only saw The Weakest Link once or twice (I did watch the Dutch version more often, but I don't really like watching quizzes on television). Anyway, though I definitely prefer to read an engrossing story or a novel, I enjoyed reading about Robinson's life. The injustices toward women in the fifties (some of which still exist today) were quite enraging, especially the attitudes of judges towards rape, how horrible to say rape is less traumatising than burglary, how dare they say that!! I admire Robinson for her ability to analyse her relationship with her mother and the consequences it had on her life. I didn't think she wrote too much about her alcoholism, but thought she didn't explain well enough how she got a hold on it. That part never became clear to me; was it thanks to the AA or to Johnny or pure will's power (which I doubt)? The part about all the newspapers was less interesting, because it was difficult for me to distinguish between them, being quite unfamiliar with the names. The transition from newspapers to television seemed quite abrupt and only to the end. I liked the final chapter, about the Weakest Link, never knew it had such a big impact in the USA. All in all, this book makes me want to see her show again, I'll certainly watch it differently this time! Thank you E-mile, for this opportunity and off to MyopicMeringue (what a cool screenname!) it goes!

I received this today. Thanks, owlet - and thanks, E-mile, for starting this ring. I'm looking forward to reading this. I actually don't normally read celebrity biographies, but I'm curious about Anne Robinson's life. I've always enjoyed her caustic humour and sarcasm - from 'Points of View' to 'The Weakest Link' and I'm hoping to find the same tone in her writing style.

I just finished this book last night ... and *ulp* I realise I've had it for almost two months - sorry guys! It's a great read - I really enjoyed it. Very interesting to read about Anne Robinson's life - it's not quite how I expected it to be, and I was surprised and impressed at how vulnerable she is in her writing. The name-dropping gets a bit annoying, but I was fascinated by the social and politcal commentary. I will send this book to tabyorky as soon as I get an address.

after reading this book, I look to Anne and the weakest link in a different way. she has had an unusual life. I liked the book, but I agree with muizz: some parts were less interesting because of the unknown names and situations.

Dit pakketje kwam echt als een volslagen verrassing. Wist niet meer dat ik me ervoor opgegeven had. Ben als nieuwbakken moeder wel benieuwd naar hoe Anne het ervanaf brengt. And now the translantion: This package was quite a surprise. I totally forgot that I had joined this bookring. As a mother I am eager to read how Anne is coping and handling things. Somehow it didn't quite catch my attention, so I will send it to Suzy26. I rather watch Anne on tv in The Weakest Link instead of reading about all the misery in her life.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I already was an admirer, but now I admire Anne even more. She is so brutally honest about herself, so open about her motives or lack thereof. Her story is never self-piteous or vindictive. She just tells it like it was. Sure, she had a lot of misery in her life and she really hit rock bottom, but she came out on top eventually. I will send this book to Readsome tomorrow.

Well, what to say about this book? An enjoyable read, sure, but isn't ms. Robinson a tiny bit too convinced about herself. Her comparisons with Margaret Thatcher and Lady Di seem grotesk to me. However, she seems hones enough. I would like to know more about her daughter; she seems interesting enough to me. Enjoy, Ruby!

What a great surprise!!! I had completely forgotten (as usual)I ever asked to read this book. It comes at a very good time--I just finished "God's County" from biba89, and am almost finished with an SF book from John MacDonald, from 1953, "Planet of Dreamers" (which I think would make a great movie if no one has done it yet), and was wondering what to read next. Thanks Willemijn--and double thanks for the postcard. Too bad he's too young (and fit) for me . . . Thanks to you too E-mile for starting the ring. I see I'm the last one on the ring; unless I hear differently, I'll send (or give) it back to you.

I noticed it's galadriel's birthday today; since I promised weeks ago to get this book off to her, I'm going to do it NOW as a sort of late birthday present. The thing that's slowing me down is making the journal entry. Unlike almost everyone who's already read the book, I was not impressed. Mainly because Anne Robinson is supposed to be a journalist, and I thought the book was not at all well written. She kept doing exactly what I just did and will do again. Writing in incomplete sentences. Drove me mad. OK, so it can be a useful stylistic device. Once. In a while. But she did it over and over. And over. In the interests of getting this book in the mail, I won't take the time to cite specifics. But I cannot let this go unremarked: "She was polite, kind, charming, and suggested I wrote some pieces for the woman's pages (p. 244). NO SHE DID NOT!! She (should have) suggested you "write" some pieces. Where was the editor in this book which rambled all over and never seemed to me to take off? That's what I kept asking myself. But more, I kept thinking, this woman's a writer. She should know better. I begin to rant. Oh now, wait. There's one more gaff I can't let go unnoticed. " . . . Peter, at the time an author come teacher come jack of all trades . . ." Please, please, please! That should be "cum"? Sorry to be so picky, but that's my job. Despite my complaints, I'm not sorry I read the book. I just wish Anne Robinson would have taken as much care with her writing as she does with her face . . . Thanks E-mile for the chance to read the book.

The book is here now. Between the pages I have found an beautiful bookmark, that will come in handy, the ones I normally use are starting to fall apart. If someone is missing it let me know, I'd be happy to return it to you. When I heard that this book would be coming my way I raced to finish the book I was reading at the moment. I will dig into this right away.

This journal entry is long overdue, sorry for that. I had been looking forward to reading this book, but when I started it didn't quite meet my expectations. After a long pause I gave it a second chance and managed to finish it, but still wasn't too thrilled about it. I know Anne Robinson only from the Weakest Link, so I have to admit that that was the chapter I liked best. Some parts were interesting, but for me it was difficult to connect to most of the story. Anne is ready to go home now. Goodbye ;-)
