This is great! I loved Stranahan. Hiaasen has brilliant, imaginative writing. I am not usually a fan of mystery books but I love his because he ties in environmental factors as well as wierdos.

I am looking forward to reading Skinny Dip.

7 out of 10

My girlfriend asked me for something funny to read a couple of months ago. I handed her this book and Bill Fitzhugh's Pest Control. I think she picked this one because of the sailfish on the cover. When she finished it, I asked if she wanted to post a review and she said she'd just let me add it to mine. She says this book is like an "R-rated episode of Miami Vice". She wasn't real impressed with the beginning, and then she was disappointed that it never got better.

I read it over the weekend. I enjoy Carl Hiaasen's sense of humor. I can't figure out the right descriptor for it (dry, sarcastic, satirical, caustic, etc). This was not the best of his novels. I still enjoyed it (my girlfriend would be fast to point out that I also liked Miami Vice). I liked the departure from the washed-up newspaper reporter that appears in so many of his novels, and the fact that Stranahan didn't fall into bed with women as often as Hiaasen's washed-up newspaper reporters tend to. He took his normal swings at Florida politics, corruption and environmentalism, threw in a couple of weird details, and went a little overboard with the plastic surgery.

I had planned to set up a bookray for this (and still may), but my girlfiend mentioned possibly releasing it at her office (she hasn't done a wild release yet). I'll add an entry when we do.

This book has not been rated.

This has been sitting around my stack of books to set up as bookrays for more than 6 months. I've got a spare half-hour tonight, so I'm going to see what I can do with it.

I am PM'ing everyone with it on their wishlist that I thought might be interested. I have started by inviting people who have participated in my other rings/rays successfully. I have also announced it on this thread in the forums. This ring is still open, anyone else wishing to join will be added to the end if shipping preferences allow.

  How my bookray works:
+ Someone will PM you for your address, PM them back
      - If you are swamped, ask them to skip you and PM me and I'll move you down the list
      - Otherwise, send them your address
+ You receive the book, please make a journal entry letting everyone know that you received it
+ Put the book at the top of your TBR pile (under other rings/rays that arrived first)
+ Read the book (take your time and enjoy the book, don't feel rushed to finish it)
+ When the end is in sight, check the book's journal and PM the next person to get their address
+ Finish the book, make another journal entry and let everyone know what you thought of the book
+ Send the book to the next person on the list, make release notes (Controlled Release)
or journal entry to let everyone know that it's in the mail
  * Feel free to PM me at any time with questions *

+The last person in my bookrays can do whatever they want with the book (keep/release/RABCK/relay/ring/ray/trade/etc) after they finish it

Ray Completed
Enjoy!

Somehow Hiaasen books just leap to the top of Mt. TBR ; )

I read this over the weekend as a break from a rather dark ARC (That I'm enjoying but oh...)

I read Skinny Dip and wondered about Stranahan's back story. It was everything I had hoped. Not my favourite Hiaasen book (wasn't particularly interested in the supporting characters, but Stranahan was great), but it makes the top half.

Thanks for adding me to the ring. Sending off today.

It's here, safe and sound! I have a trade to finish and one book ring ahead, but I don't foresee either of those taking too long. This will be on its way to "Ilios" in Tampa before you know it. (I might even deliver it in person!)

Will journal when I've started and finished! Thanks again for passing the book along to me!

Added July 26, 2006: OK! Starting this book today! I just finished another book ring, which I highly recommend! Click here to read about the book: The Binding Chair (Link)

*ANYWAY* I'm PM-ing "Ilios" in Tampa so that I can send the book along JUST AS SOON as I finish!

Added July 29, 2006: Halfway through! Haven't rec'd response from "Ilios" yet. Will PM them again ... By the way, I'm enjoying the story!

July 30, 2006: Finished this today! Unfortunately, it lasted about 50 pages too long and one grisly murder too many. Otherwise, an interesting story, and, as always, I enjoyed the satire! It's all packaged, stamped, and ready to go! Have PMed "Ilios" again, no response. Will give it a few more days to see what happnens!

9 out of 10

I finished this book this morning and wasn't disappointed. This was my first Hiaasen and I'll definitely come back for more. I loved the cynical dry style and the outrageous situations - very Floridian! :o) Although Tampa is not as crazy, we have our share of freaks! :o)

I really enjoy the characters of Stranahan and Al Garcia, as well as the not so subtle real-life inspiration for character of Reynaldo Flemm.;o)

UPDATE 8/21/06
I am sending a 2nd PM to the next BXer today. If I don't hear from her within 1 week, I'll go down the list.

Finished this last night. Hiaasen delivered once again! I didn't realize that he has been writing books since 1989 (when this one is copyrighted). I love how he can manage to have a huge cast of characters and still develop everyone's backgrounds. I find his books are hard to re-tell because of the elaborate events and characters but easy to follow when I'm reading...

Okay so I'll try to send this to Perryfan before the holiday on Monday!

9 out of 10

I just finished reading this - another super Hiaasen novel full of wacky characters that inhabit South Florida. This is about the 5th Hiaasen I have read and I would have to say its one of the best. (Others I have read include Tourist Season, Double Whammy, Strip Tease, Lucky You). Hiaasen has a knack for coming up with characters that are so memorable. Chemo and his Weed-whacker prosthesis, the incompetent Dr. Graveline, and Reynaldo Flemm - the Geraldo-like journalist in seach of a scoop are unforgettable. Even though this novel goes over-the-top in the grisly department, I would highly recommend it.

I have PMed dietcokemama for her address and will send the book on as soon as I receive it.

Sorry to have kept this one for so long. I accidently signed up for two rings with this book, and both came at the same time with several other books. My mother in law read this one and loved it(as I did). I am a huge Carl Hiassen fan, this was a great one.
The book is in the mail(airmail) and on it's way to Garibaldisghost in the UK.

Thanks BigrTex for including me in this ring.

8 out of 10

This is the first time I've read a Carl Hiaasen book and I can only say it was definitely worth the wait!

There are some fearfully gruesome killings and gruesome surgical procedures that are described in an extremely amusing way and the fast-paced story kept me 'hooked' right to the end.

Many thanks to BigrTex for setting up this ring.

Great stuff - this is vintage Hiaasen. I love the way he creates bizarre characters and situations - yes, they are all slightly over the top, but I think that's deliberate and a good way of making them memorable.
I'm not quite sure whether I really liked Stranahan as much as I have liked other Hiaasen 'heroes'. He was just a little TOO sadistic and enjoyed the torture side of things a little TOO much to completely get my sympathy.
Chemo with his Weed Whacker arm was inspired, although I'm not quite sure what the point of the Christina character was, as her story never really seemed to go anywhere.
Thanks for letting me read this - it's now on its way to stubee.

Well after sitting on my bookshelf for around twenty months I've finaly got round to reading this and I loved it. Carl Hiaasen is a great novelist, I love his characters and the situtations that Hiaasen put them in, a satirical masterpiece in my opinion.

I've agreed to send this to arugh48187 who is based in India so it'll be in the mail in the next week or so.

Next up: John Fowles - The Collector (1001 Book) - a bookring hosted by Heaven-Ali
