When her family is lost in a terrible disaster, 15-year-old Green is haunted by loss and by the past. Struggling to survive physically and emotionally in a place where nothing seems to grow and ashes are everywhere, Green retreats into the ruined realm of her garden. But in destroying her feelings, she also begins to destroy herself, erasing the girl she'd once been as she inks ravens into her skin. It is only through a series of mysterious encounters - with a ghostly white dog and a mute boy - that Green relearns the lessons of love and begins to heal as she tells her own story.

Wow. For such a short book, it's pretty powerful. This book is about new beginnings, in many ways. There's also a touch of fantasy about Hoffman's characters, which makes them seem just a tad surreal.

This is the 3rd "children's/teen" book I've read by Ms. Hoffman, and it is most definitely my favorite by far.

Shadow-luvs-J and I were book shopping last week. This happened to be one of the books I picked up and was really interested in getting. Glad I behaved and did not purchase it. Should have known my fairy bookmother would have already bought it for bookcrossing. :) Thanks!!

I am really looking forward to reading this as I enjoyed her two other YA books. I would love to frame the picture on the cover. Just beautiful. Once I read it I will be sharing it with shiznitchels and Shadow-luvs-J. Thanks so much!!

This was a powerful book!

I hadn't realized that Alice Hoffman also wrote YA books and I was really intrigued by the book description... I can't wait to see what the book is like!
Thanks so much for sharing this with me, kbgoffe!

This is a beautiful book: the story itself and Hoffman's writing of it. I'd be lying if I said that the disaster didn't make me think of September 11th, but I guess that just makes this story timely in addition to being timeless.

I definitely want to read more of Hoffman's YA books.

I offered this book in the "Pass it on Paperbacks - USA" relay and it's already been snatched up. I'll be sending it to mskdm20 on Saturday.

It wasn't until just now that I noticed the art on the back cover of the book... from the back cover art - even more than from the front - you can tell that the artist read and was inspired by the book.

Received a few days ago and just now finished it.

I love this book! Alice Hoffman is one of the reasons why I love to read, and this book is no exception.

Green is a shy girl who loves to grow things in her family's garden. One day her family goes to the city to sell vegetables and Green stays behind. A terrible accident destroys the city and all that live in it, including Green's parents.
Green is then forced to live alone. She becomes a bitter girl. She wears black, tattoos her skin, hammers nails in her boots, and wears a necklace of thorns around her neck. One day she meets a ghost dog, an abandonded bird family, and a strange boy turns up at her house. Through these encounters Green becomes the girl she once was and begins to heal.
