My wife has read this and made the comment that while the stories are good they do get a little repetitive since you know there is going to be a twist.

I have started reading it and I am a few stories in. So far at least one seems familiar and so I think they come under the category of "oldies but goodies".

Now I have finished the book I tend to agree with my wife. A lot of a stories are quite dark. In particular, after reading the story about fagging I basically wish I hadn't. My favourites are the more light hearted stories, in particular the last story about the cat.

Lytteltonwitch told me she was bringing round a few books... I think she meant to say a few boxes of books!

Left just inside the door of the Indoor Market in Cardigan, Ceredigion (Wales) ... just because I could.

Well I was just a wee bit disappointed with these stories. He's obviously a really good writer. His intelligence just shines off the page. But the stories were just a wee bit ... tame (?). Tamer than I expected anyway, and some of the twists were so underwhelming I was a bit at a loss to understand why he bothered writing them in the first place. They had some really great build ups. Characters full of quirks, mostly unpleasant ones (I have a feeling old Dahl-yface didn't like human beings) were described in wonderful detail, and then the twist (if it wasn't one you guess already) was strangely unaffecting, dull or just more of an anti-twist.

Case in point. Some people having a dinner party or somesuch. Bloke claims he can name any wine in any part of an obscure part of France ... or something (read it a few months ago so details are disappearing quickly) ... and it turns out ... he cheated, and looked up the details in the host's study! Bit of a nonending really. I was expecting something far more dark and interesting ... and generally twisty and maybe just a little bit turny.

Oh well ... maybe the tv series was better. I shall have to check that out instead. Strange naked woman dancing in a snake like manner with some satanic flames with weird seventies music over the top??? I should coco :-D
