This is a very well-written memoir of a woman with an extremely disjointed childhood. Evidently, she is a prolific author, primarily of children's books. I have never read any of her other books. This is well-written and sad as she is continually abandoned by her family and shuffled from one circumstance to another.

Received as a RABCK from Amusedbythis--I'll journal again after I read it.
Wow, what a horrible childhood! Fox's mother never wanted a baby and her alcoholic father never wanted to displease her mother. She was abandoned at an orphanage as an infant. Her grandmother sent her uncle to get her and take her to a minister. Her parents and grandmother bounce in and out of her life at their own whim and she is shunted from one household to another until she's out on her own.
All of this is told very matter of factly in an almost cold, impersonal voice.
Fox gave up her first child for adoption. They were later reunited.
That child, Linda Carroll, is the mother of Courtney Love.

Arrived safely in New Jersey right before the anticipated snow storm! I will let this one warm up for a couple of days before I dive into this story of what looks to be a really good one! (I have to finish my library book first!) Thank you JennyC1230 for starting this VBB and including me. =D
Let me start by saying, I am not a huge fan of memoirs in the past and have only recently started to read them. That said, I also feel strange commenting on someone else's life! I think this was a little sad to read about this little girl bounced around from house to house. Its hard to gain a sense of family and self that way. I am happy to see a bit of a happy reunion in the adult part of her life. All in all, the story itself was interesting.
I was not a fan of the writing style. I think it was a bit choppy, thinking it could have been expanded a little with more personal thoughts. But since it a memoir, I am happy that the author shared it with us in whatever way she deemed appropriate.
I know many readers will find it to be a good read. I will save this to return it to the VBB which is heading my way shortly.

It was fascinating, partly because she is Courtney Love's grandmother. She doesn't talk about that in the book but I was surprised. Before I read this book the only thing I knew about Paula Fox was that she was the author of One-Eyed Cat, a book I read last year.
So she had quite the interesting childhood. As the back of the book says she was "born in the twenties to nomadic, Bohemian parents." Her mother doesn't want anything to do with her, tells her husband to take her to an orphanage. Her Cuban grandmother takes her out of there pretty quick but she has to get back to Cuba so leaves her with friends of one of her children. A minister visiting the family who has infant Paula takes an interest in her and takes her in. Dad shows up again when Paula is about six and Paula bounces around between her parents, her grandmother, the minister and various people she gets left with. It really is wild. What I find amazing is that no one seemed to mistreat her as a child, her mother was incapable of loving her, but no one beats her or molests her and she successfully makes friends and attends school wherever she finds herself. Obviously she made a success of herself as an adult as well. She writes beautifully, very detailed but never boring.
