This book is based on the film starring Drew Barrymore.
Beverly didn't start out bad, but when she learns there is no money to send her to college, she loses interest in everything but riding around in cars, drinking, smoking and rebelling. She is looking for trouble.

Posted book to Lauraloo29.
This arrived today. I still owe a trade in return! Thank you!
Well, I'm not sure what I thought of this book. I felt sad for Beverly and her need to grow up so quickly and then not "getting it" until much later.
Accepted by Kyrissaean as part of the "emigrating books" Relay
It's here! I've been meaning to see the movie based on this book, so when I saw the book offered on bookrelay I thought it'd be great to read the book first! Thanks for the relay trade, lauraloo29!
I really liked this! Beverly had a lot to overcome, and it was really admirable that she actually managed to do so. Honestly I don't think very many people in the same situation would do as well. I'd love to know how Jason is now, and how he felt about growing up with his mother. This was an easy and enjoyable read, which I found pretty absorbing. A book about someone having a hard time in life could have been a lot more grim, but it's not--and she has a nice writing style.
And now I know why I've seen other reviewers say that the book was nothing like the movie. From the previews I've seen, the movie is made out to be a light-hearted comedy/romance. This book was more about Beverly's personal journey and her relationship with her parents and her son--the "boys" who made the title aren't especially main characters here.

Mailed yesterday to Noumena12, as part of the second Bookrelay.com Yankee Book Swap. Happy reading!
Thanks Kyrissaean. Looks like I'll be adding it to Mt. TBR for a little bit.
I haven't seen this film...but the thing that struck me about this book is that this could have been me (or my friends) only in the 70's instead of the 60's. We pushed the boundaries with our parents and with our sexual relationships. Some of us were lucky...some weren't so lucky.
This is an amazing story of survival and beating the odds.

This is so funny. I was talking about the movie with some members of my family just last night, and then, here's the book! :)
Be forewarned: spoilers following! It wasn't at all as I'd expected. How could she do all those drugs and have all that sex? Times must have really been different back then. That's so scary nowadays!
I had a child at the same age as Beverly, but handled the situation totally different. Sadly, I never got to go to college. However, that didn't have a negative impact on my life. I know someone that went to college who's currently unemployed & living in his car, poor thing. While I went and got a GED (never went to college) and have never lived in a car & hope to never do so. Isn't life weird?
Anyhow, it's good that Bev and Jason ended up having such a good relationship & it's terrific that he appreciated his mom for who she was. He sounds like a great kid. I enjoyed the book & passed it on to my sister.
Needmorezoloft, thanks for letting me take part in this. :)

Got this back from my sister (and mom) a few days ago & sending it to candieb in today's mail.
It's here! I have a conference this week so I'll probably take it with me. I should have this one read pretty quick and on to the next person :-) Yay!
Well, I didn't hate it. But I didn't love it. It felt disjointed at times and she would switch subjects/times in the same paragraph. Irritated me a bit.
I actually (ducking) liked the movie better. I felt it was more fleshed out. I have no idea if she had anything to do with the making of the movie or how true it was, but it just felt like it "flowed" better.
Having said that, I'm glad I read the book, it was good, just not something I would have enjoyed had I not known something about her life from the movie.

Received today from Candyb, the same day she received another bookring book that I sent to her! I am in between books tonight, so I will be able to start this right away.... Fortunately, I never saw the movie...
I agree with noumee12, it could have been me! I enjoyed reading about Beverly and growing up with a child in tow. Inspiring.
Received today. This looks like a quick read, so I should have it finished and sent on to Sunshinedreem soon. Thanks!
I enjoyed this book. I've never seen the movie, but I've been told the book is much better (as usually seems to be the case). Very interesting and inspiring.
Sunshinedreem has asked to be skipped (as per her bookshelf), so I'll send this on to mysteryfan03 tomorrow. Thanks, needmorezoloft, for starting this ray!

Got this in the mail today! I have a couple of rings in front of this, and then will get to it. It looks like a quick read. Thanks
I enjoyed this quick read. It flowed well and I could relate to some of the people in the book as I grew up in the 70s and know many people who were a little older and lived some of this life. I am glad that her son grew up healthy and was so mature and adaptable! This was a touching memoir. Thanks for sharing it!
It's here! I'll dive into this one as soon as I finish my current read, probably by the end of the week.
This was a quick, easy read - I flew through it in an afternoon. I haven't seen the movie, but the book could have been the story of a good friend of mine which is just what she said about the movie. She too had a difficult relationship with her parents, was a "wild" child, had a child young, went to college later in life, and turned out ok. :)
I felt like the book could have had more depth in a lot of places; it seemed to skip over the surface of events rather than really exploring them fully. That kept the book moving quickly and the tone light, but it left me feeling like I didn't really know the whole story. But then, perhaps the author doesn't really know it any better either, or didn't want to share her introspection any more than she did.
It was an entertaining read and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to experience it. Thanks for sharing needmorezoloft. I have Rrrcaron's address now, so I'll be passing this on via media mail on Monday.

I loved this story. I'm now going to rent the movie so I can compare the two. Sorry I held this so long. Happened to find it in my daughter's bookcase! Read it in one sitting afterwards. Sending it on to Butler today!

I found this a really good read. It was fast, and I couldn't put it down. The author seems to have good self-awareness. I was very sad for her in the middle section of the book, and glad things turned out OK. It was more a tale of her relationship with her parents than anything else, and her toying with many of the things people did in the 1960s as an effort to have more of a 'life' than her mother. The way I read it, I felt that it was all an attempted rebellion against her 'traditional, Italian' family. And only later does she realise that in fact, rebelling for rebellion's sake didn't get her anywhere, and that different people can be happy in different ways. She was disproportionately disadvantaged for foolish mistakes she made as a child, that much is clear to me.
Beverley's mother evoked huge sympathy: I couldn't get around the feeling that despite the conclusions, she was really trapped somewhere she didn't want to be and had simply learned to put up with it. I'm glad Beverley avoided the same fate, and I was actually proud of her by the end of the book.
I didn't find the novel disjointed, and I thought it flowed well. A mesmerising story of one woman's growth into a mature adult, but one who retains her playful side with a great flourish.
Thanks to needmorezoloft for starting the ring and letting me share this book. I have PM'd the next person on the list and as soon as I have their address I'll send the book out.

Wow, that was quick. I received the book today in the post. It was a nice surprise after getting a blood test at the doctor's. Many thanks to needmorezoloft and Navig8r for sharing. I loved the film version of this so I'm looking forward to reading the original story.
As I mentioned in my previous entry, I've seen the film version of this book. And I hate to say it but I prefer the film. However, I think you need to treat the film and book as different entities because they are so different. But check out the film because Drew Barrymore is fantastic in it.
The book was rather depressing for me because I would hate to have been in Beverly's position. I know now it would be easier for her to get an abortion but I believe she felt her life wasn't going anywhere before she got pregnant. The news her parents couldn't afford to send her to college devastated her. I did let out a mini cheer when she got into the local 'good' college despite juggling childcare and her parents' constant interference.
I'll post this off after the festive period because I have a fear of packages going 'mysteriously' missing.

Just a quick update on this book. I've PMed MaggieCassidy a few times but have had no reply. From her profile stats it doesn't look like she's been active on Bookcrossing for sometime. I am going to move onto the next person on the list.
This book is being posted off to CosmicGirl tomorrow via air mail.
Your book is not lost. It just found a new (temporary) home. Thanks, i'll try to read it as soon as possible. Sorry for this late JE, i was absent.
