I read this some years back, and all I remember is being completely confused and frustrated by it. But to give you some idea of why I bought it, some comments from the back of the book (all typos mine):

"Brilliantly fuses the development of evolutionary theory and computing ... prophetic ... it could also be that with this challenging book, Dyson, like his heroes, is years ahead of his time"
TOM STANDAGE, DAILY TELEGRAPH

"A very good book about life's grand project after animals: machines ... At times ironically resigned to the notion of progress, at others enthused and enraged, it reads as though the poet Robert Frost had popped ecstasy in the company of Alan Turing"
SIMON INGS, NEW SCIENTIST

"An extraordinarily exciting, intriguing and very idiosyncratic book"
PHILIP W. ANDERSON, NATURE

"Fabulous ... a brilliant read ... You'll never regard your PC the same way again"
WALLY HAMMOND, TIME OUT

Gosh, that's nearly enough to make me want to give it another go, even though I know I disliked it the first time around!!
