On a hot summer day, Joanna Mason's family slowly wanders home along a country lane. A moment later, Joanna's life is changed forever...

On a dark night thirty years later, ex-detective Jackson Brodie finds himself on a train that is both crowded and late. Lost in his thoughts, he suddenly hears a shocking sound...

At the end of a long day, 16-year-old Reggie is looking forward to watching a little TV. Then a terrifying noise shatters her peaceful evening. Luckily, Reggie makes it a point to be prepared for an emergency...

I knew I would love this book - & I did. It's a wonderful mix of mystery, suspense & in parts it's heartbreakingly sad...all those tragedies that befall poor Reggie.

There's also those wonderful touches of humour that Atkinson is so adept at...while my heart was aching for Reggie, at the same time I'm smirking & sniggering at some throwaway comment! Genius :o)

I know Brodie's back in "Started early, took my dog", but I hope Louise Munroe also puts in an appearance, & personally I'd love to see Reggie back - think her & Brodie would make an entertaining team!

Swopped a book in a free library telephone box.
There’s a lot happening in this book, I found it difficult to keep track of who was involved in each tragedy. I loved Reggies Character the best, & would love to know what happens next in her life.
I think I need to start the book again to clarify some of the characters.
