Somebody made a comment about this book in "Book Talk" - I don't even remember if it was positive or not. But when I came across this book today, it seemed to jump off the shelf at me, and since I seem to be buying ('reading') more memoirs these days, I thought I might as well pick this book up too.
Added to Mt TBR.

What a scary, funny book. I hope that Augusten was exxagerating already exxagerated journal entries from his childhood. And even with exxageration this story is outrageous. Thank goodness he has a sense of humour, or at least uses humour to get through life, b/c his upbringing was so unique, and ridiculous, and amazing, and at times quite funny.

I enjoyed this book, but it disturbed me as well. I'm not sure what I'll do with it - whether it be a bookring, or released. It really was an enjoyable book, so I think I will want to share it with others once my husband gets a chance to read it.

I've decided to send this book out on a short bookring. I'm opening it up to readers in the US/Canada. If you are interested, please send me a PM. Thanks!! Brewster13

Received book in the mail today. Will start reading tomorrow (or maybe tonight if I get other book finished!!!)

Journal Entry 7 by deereads from Barrie, Ontario Canada on Saturday, September 23, 2006
Well...very disturbing but I really couldn't put it down. The book even went to the ballgame with me so I could keep reading. I guess it is like passing a terrible car wreck...you don't want to see anything gory, but you look anyway. I would like to read "Dry" the follow up memoir to this one to see what happens next in his life. It is packed up and ready to go onto T02S03B11D20. Will post when I get it mailed.

I have finished this book (although I don't know why I bothered.) Today I sent my second notice to Booksnbeer for her address. If I don't hear from her, I will go to the next person. As for the book, I thought it was nothing but a bunch of rubbish. I wonder if the editors and/or publishers ever bother to check the veracity of stories such as these.

This book is on it's way once again.

Journal Entry 12 by BooksnBeer from Pasadena, Florida USA on Tuesday, October 17, 2006
Received this in yesterday's mail. Really glad I will get to read it before I see the movie. The reviews on this are so mixed, I can't wait to dig into it.

Journal Entry 13 by BooksnBeer from Pasadena, Florida USA on Tuesday, November 7, 2006
I finished this book – but, I can’t say I enjoyed it. I have to agree with T02503B11D20 – Does the publisher check anything before they put the Biography label on something. Is this like the “a million little pieces” scenario. The author wants us to believe a “really big fish story”. Oh well, I have already put too much time into it.

It will be on it’s way to the next on the list as soon as I receive an address.

Journal Entry 14 by Caridad from Miami, Florida USA on Wednesday, November 22, 2006
Received in the mail. Will be in the TBR pile because of the holiday. I like the idea of including the postcards. Will continue the tradition.

Whether it was all fact or fiction, it still made me laugh a lot. I KNOW people like these charachters. Looking forward to getting a hold of "Dry".

Put additional postcard in book and put in mailbox to elfgirlsmom.

Journal Entry 16 by elfgirlsmom from Phoenix, Arizona USA on Tuesday, January 9, 2007
Looking forward to reading this has so many diverse reviews but have heard good things about it. Thanks for sharing. Love all the postcards!

Journal Entry 17 by elfgirlsmom from Phoenix, Arizona USA on Sunday, January 21, 2007
Well, I finished this tonight...not sure what to say really, it was pretty disturbing and very sad. Some of the stories were pretty hard to believe, so hopefully there was some exaggeration. I am usually a fan of the humorous memoir, I love Laurie Notaro, and found Burrouhs Sellevision funny, but don't think I'll read any more by him soon.

I've requested for an address from tashe and will mail out as soon as I get that.

Thanks to brewster13 for sharing!

Dropped in the mail this morning to tashe
Happy Reading!

Journal Entry 19 by Tashe from Toledo, Ohio USA on Thursday, February 15, 2007
Just received, despite all the snow that was dumped on us yesterday! Hopefully I'll get to it this weekend.

Journal Entry 20 by Tashe from Toledo, Ohio USA on Tuesday, February 20, 2007
Like many people before me, I didn't care for it. It indeed had the feel of exagerated for public consumption quality for it rather than any real sense of reality. Who was it that asked about it being one of the “a million little pieces” scenario? I think they hit the nailhead with that comment. This book didn't have the feel of reality about it and I couldn't drag myself into it at all.

I am contacting the next in line ( valerief ) while I go postcard hunting!

Thank you Tashe. I have a few books on top of this one, but I am eager to read this before I see the movie.

Journal Entry 22 by valerief from Queens, New York USA on Wednesday, June 6, 2007
Agreeing with what's already been posted here, the other question that came to mind was, "Do people like his parents and the Finches really exist out there?" I guess one benefit of Augusten rough (if it's true) childhood is that he accomplished his dream of coming to New York and being a celebrity based on his memoirs.

I have one more book for accountkel. This will be going in the mail next week, with a new postcard as well. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 23 by acountkel from Charlotte, North Carolina USA on Tuesday, June 26, 2007
Caught today.
Thank you brewster for including me.
Looking forward to reading this one.

Journal Entry 24 by acountkel from Charlotte, North Carolina USA on Wednesday, August 1, 2007
This was a very disturbing account of a boy whose father was an alcoholic and wanted nothing to do with him and whose mother was mentally ill and made her shrink the boy’s legal guardian. What does make this book stand out and what left an impression on me, is the story. It is almost unbelievable. Some readers found it humorous. Although there were some quirky things that happened that may make you laugh, I did not find this book funny at all. It was almost depressing. The most promising part of this book is the fact that Augusten was able to make it to adulthood and publish his story.

Thank you for including me.
Will send to the next person as soon as I get their address.

Journal Entry 25 by RustyReader2 from Nepean , Ontario Canada on Saturday, August 18, 2007
I just got home from 2 weeks of camping and this was one of the books waiting for me! Just finishing another bookray right now, will get this started as soon as possible.

Journal Entry 26 by RustyReader2 from Nepean , Ontario Canada on Thursday, November 29, 2007
This book surprised me, I did not expect to like it at all, but it grew on me. Augusten lived a very unbelievable life, I am happy that he decided to write a book about it. Thank you brewster13 for this bookray.

Am I to keep it or pass it back to you??? I have a couple friends who would like very much to read it.
