A Place of Hiding
9 journalers for this copy...
The sudden death of Guy Brouard after his morning swim shocks the residents of Guernsey. Brouard had been a generous patron and benefactor of the island since his arrival there a decade ago, and his demise puts a question mark over many cherished projects.
When a young American woman is charged with the murder, her brother seeks help from the only contact he has in the UK – Deborah St. James. Deborah is horrified to find that her old friend has been arrested and persuades her husband Simon to accompany her to Guernsey to avert this miscarriage of justice.
What they find on that beautiful island is a tangled web of deceit and betrayal, with its origins in wartime Occupation. In solving the crime, they also learn painful lessons about loyalty and trust, and the loving tyranny of family ties.
A typical Elizabeth George mystery novel – not at her best, but still classes better than many other writers. I did miss Havers and Lynley…

Great - my 40th book caught :-)
And such a beautiful hardcover too! Somehow I expected the paperback... Will start reading straight away!
Thanks so much to Ophelia1 for making this available as a bookring!
------------
24.5.
I liked the book but not as much as most other Elizabeth George novels.
I didn't miss Lynley and Havers (on the opposite I found it rather intriguing to have the St. Jameses as the protagonists this time) but the story was a bit long-winded in parts. The ending however was rather brilliant :-)
Shame though on the publishing house: There's quite a few too many misprints in this book!

Arrived safely today at the same time as another bookray. So I will start with this book after I finished the other one (not as big as this one).
A typical Elizabeth George book. Quite interesting to have the St. Jameses at a case again. Although their relationship did not really convince me... But the ending was brilliant and again almost to the last page you weren't sure who did it.
Will send it on to the next one on the list as soon as I have the address.

Came with the mail today. Thought there was a huge brick inside the envelop, but when I opened it it was this BOOK! Dear me, this one's definitely gonna keep me busy for a week or two...

Finished it at last. Well, what do I say? First of all, I didn’t quite miss Lynley and Havers the way I thought I’d do. Not a bad idea to have a story without them for a change, especially since the Brouards, the Rivers, and the Ouseleys make up for the loss.
Again, Elizabeth George is a master in bringing life to her characters, and especially to their relationships with each other. A real treat to read for a psychologist. Her trick is to decompose the course of action into several threads, constantly switching from one to another, with each thread being told from the perspective of a different character. However, in this book she may have overdone it a bit, with just too many threads and too frequent shifting between them. Occasionally this makes you feel like someone’s holding out a candy in front of your face, and the moment you reach to grab it, they withdraw it from you. Though this is annoying, it could have been forgiven. A different matter, however, are the pretty obvious contradictions contained in all this business about the painting. To me, this really spoiled the plot in the end, which is a shame all the more as the story otherwise is quite convincing and could have been one of her best.
To be sent on to fannynatalie tomorrow.

Well, I did miss Lynley and Havers a lot and the story was too long-winded in my opinion. Nevertheless thanks to Ophelia1! I will bring the book to the post office next week. The next one in the row is holle7, but as she is quite busy now with other bookrings, I will send the book directly to sheepseeker. holle7 may have the book afterwards.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
RELEASE NOTES:

Arrived safely by mail, thanks to Ophelia and sheepseeker. I have some books on my MTBR and this has to wait, but I will give my best!
Finally it's done. I read the book with interest, missing Lynley and Lady Helen a bit but not too much.
Because of private affairs I could seldom read more than 30 pages a day, sometimes I read nothing for days and that made it a bit difficult to follow the different threads.
A good book, I liked it!
29.01.: Today sent to rowlf via snailmail.

didn't have enough time to finish the book.

it's now on its way to coco!
Angekommen! Das trifft sich sehr gut, weil ich gerade den vorhergehenden Elizabeth-George-Band lese!
Finally I'm through! Somehow this book took me ages to read and I was relieved to reach the end.
The story was quite long-winded with many irrelevant threads, the St. James's marriage problems weren' that interesting, and the end was a bit disappointing for me. Unfortunately, reading English late in the evenings wasn't such a pleasure, I better should have read it in German.
But I suppose I keep on reading Elizabeth George novels :-)

Das Buch hat nach relativ langer Abwesenheit seinen Weg wieder ins heimische Bücherregal gefunden - glücklich darüber, nicht nur von mir gelesen worden zu sein ;-)
