From the back cover: "The story of a redoubtable girl who overcomes adversity with humor, spunk, and determination, Kaye Gibbons's first novel is a work of considerable subtlety and intellectual sophistication. A terrific book."
- Johnathan Yardley, Washington Post Book World
Found this at a library sale - I know I read it years ago and enjoyed it so much that I read all of Gibbons' other books, but right now I can't remember much more about it.

Release planned for Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the Town Hall in Hillrose, Colorado USA.
This book is being released in memory of rloeffle who embodied the spirit of BookCrossing.
I will be driving across northern CO on 5/22/04 and will leave this somewhere along the way and update with specifics in the evening.
5/22/04 PM: on the air conditioning unit next to the front door - hey! It was the best I could do!
To the finder of this book:
Hello! You have not only found yourself a good book, but a whole community of booklovers dedicated to sharing books with each other and the world at large. I hope you'll stick around a bit and get to know bookcrossing--maybe even make a journal entry on this book. You may choose to remain anonymous or to join (its free!). Feel free to read and keep this book, or to pass it on to a friend or even set it out "in the wild" for someone else to find like you did. If you do choose to join and journal, then you can watch the book as it travels because you'll be alerted by email each time someone makes another journal entry. It's all confidential (you're known only by your screen name and no one is ever given your e-mail address), free, and spam-free. Happy reading!

The book was well written, but hard to follow cause of the way she wrote it. I like it, and will probably pass it on to a friend or something.
