Rebus has finally moved from his tenement flat in the Marchmont area of Edinburgh... to one on the ground floor in the same building! Rebus has difficulty now with the stairs because of his COPD. He is aided in the move by his ex-colleague D.I. Siobhan Clarke but when Rebus receives a phone call from his daughter Samantha in the dead of night requesting help when her boyfriend suddenly disappears Rebus jumps to the rescue leaving Siobhan to look after his newly acquired dog Brillo while he drives up to the North West of Scotland. When the boyfriend's body is found Rebus decides to investigate himself when he finds out that his daughter is the number 1 suspect. Meanwhile Siobhan and Malcolm Fox are soon investigating an unrelated murder themselves. I
