It's always my luck that I never find a "book 1" of any series! This one I bought at the San Antonio Central library's Book Cellar and it sounds like series fantasy. Then again it IS David Eddings. I once started reading The Belgariad, but didn't read much of it, bored, but about 6 yrs later I picked it up and got sucked right in. *shrug*

Anyway, this one sounds interesting involving a dying Queen and Knights dying to save her. Of course there's a Quest and spirit raising and what-not, so maybe if I check the library and find book 1...

New entry and I've read and/or released this book.

7 out of 10

This is the second installment of The Elenium trilogy. In the first one the queen's champion, Sparhawk, comes out of exile, finds his queen mortally poisoned and kept artificially alive by loyal magicians until she can be cured, and he sets out to find how he can cure her.

In this book he's found what will cure her and is on a quest to find that which will do the job. As I mentioned in my review for book one (which belonged to the library and for which I have a review at my livejournal - see the link on my profile) I really like Sparhawk and this book kept me turning the pages to find out how he'd thwart obstacles and evil left and right. The trilogy is, I find, formulaic, so it's the character that makes me keep reading. So anyway, he's off to find that which will cure Queen Ehlana, but too bad that there's a bunch working for the source of all evil (or something like it) that want to stop him and place themselves in a position of power not to mention use that which he seeks, the magic of an ancient but long-lost gem named Bhelliom, for their own evil ends. The race is on....

From the back of the book: "Ehlana, Queen of Elenia, had been poisoned. A deep enchantment sustained her life, but only while the Knights aiding it still lived- and already they were dying, one each month.

Then Sparhawk, Knight and Queen's Champion, learned that the cure for the poison was the Bhelliom, the great jewel lost when Sarak of Thalesia had died in battle, five hundred years before.

Sparhawk and his companions set forth to find King Sarak's grave by raising ghosts of those who had perished in that ancient battle. The Seeker, an insectile monster spawned of the evil God Azash, hounded their every step. Still Sparhawk pressed on, driven by desperate need. They had to find Bhelliom before his queen could perish. They must not fail!"
