Contains slight spoilers.

A book to sweep you away. Once I started, I just couldn't stop. O'Connor keeps you hungry for more all the way through (just another chapter before I go to bed... who needs sleep anyway?). I loved the way I'd just start to feel I'd got the measure of a character, when a new revelation would shake my understanding of them yet again. I also liked the way real historical figures are worked into the story (I loved Dickens' encounter with Mulvey).

There are lots of flashbacks, but I didn't find that difficult or obstructive in my understanding of the narrative. The story is also told through journal entries, newspaper articles, ship's log entries. Whilst this initially put me off, I soon found I enjoyed the change of pace and of voice over the course of the tale.

My only quibble is the 'coincidence' of the passengers being so closely interconnected, and yet all ending up on the ship together. I know that's a big part of what makes the story work so well, but it felt like a soap opera at times. Of course, that hasn't stopped me recommending Star of the Sea to all who will listen!

Well it took me a while to get into this hence the long time before I journalled...but once I did...Wow! I really did enjoy reading of the twists and turns and how all the characters are strangely connected. It truly is a small world. I think the fact that it has come from actual accounts of people on the ship makes it more fascinating!

The beautiful use of language is well documented already but it really is well written and you really can get a feel for the differences between the classes of people.

I am so glad I have read it, I nearly gave up at about 100 pages in as just wasn't happy but am so glad I persevered!

Thanks for sharing...off to the next recipient now...

I enjoyed this book a great deal more than I expected to. I really liked the fact that all the characters were connected; after all, things seem to happen like that all the time. It's almost funny when you think about how often chance throws people together like in the book. I didn't want Merridith to be killed though, and I think that O'Conner did a great job building the suspense and finally surprising the reader at the end with who actually killed him. All in all, a good read! Now it's off to perfect-circle!

I'd heard much about this book before reading it and, sadly, I was left disappointed at the end. I struggled to get into the story and just as I began to enjoy the ship-based story, I was taken back to the back story of the characters and I found this disrupted the flow for me.

I pitied Merridith and found myself disliking Dixon because he seemed so convinced that he alone was right that it came across as being preachy almost.

Thanks flajol for giving me a chance to read it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Once I'd got past the first couple of chapters I found it a real page turner. It's very well written and very believeable, at times I had to question which of the quotations & events were historical fact and which were part of the fiction.

I loved the extravagent intro's at the begining of the chapters, I found myself tickled at them as I read through and was pleased their inclusion is explained in the end.
