What a wonderful book. I can't believe I didn't want to read this. The characters are so alive and vivid. The friendship of the "Ya-Ya's" is amazing. To have friends like that.. even just one.

I thought for sure that the Ya-Ya's were shocked at seeing Connor for the first time because he was the spitting image of Jack. It doesn't say anything about it.. but the more I think about it the more I am convinced that is why.

A great book and very fast moving. A most read for everyone.

Now I need to watch the movie again !

Thanks FamFatale for sharing this gem with me.

*Update*
After getting a PM from FamFatale, I realized that I forgot to mention :
The differences between the book and the movie are very distracting. The main idea's in the book are in the movie, just presented differently. Very well done, both the novel and the screen play.

Bookray book arrived today, just in time for me to take a short out-of-town trip! Perfect timing! :-)

Will start on it tonight.

Journal Entry 8 by Bunnybee from Amarillo, Texas USA on Monday, August 2, 2004
Finished the book last night. For a book that was a bit confusing and hard to follow in the beginning (because of the flashbacks and changing narratives)- it sure turned out to be a great story in the end! By the time I got to the last 1/4 of the book, I was crying while I was reading! I think most women would find themselves and/or their own mothers in one of the characters somewhere, somehow. And in their daughters, too- but I don't have one. It's amazing how a mother-daughter relationship can be so complex, annoying and fragile and still be so simple, natural and strong at the same time. I think the author did a great job in conveying that truth... something that I don't think is easy to put into words. And like tyvmdear said- everyone should have the blessing of at least ONE friend in this world like the Ya-Yas.

I haven't seen the movie (probably the only woman on the planet who hasn't) but I think the book is great. Thank you tyvmdear for the bookray!

Sending it today to nekki2976 in NY. Enjoy!

I loved the movie, now I get to read the book!

Thanks for starting this tyvmdear. I plan to read this before the week's out, so I'll be PMing sweetpea0678 now.

Journal Entry 10 by nekki2976 from Mumford, New York USA on Friday, August 27, 2004
I finally finished this last night. I'm sorry for holding it up.

I found that although it's a good book, it wasn't one I couldn't put down. I actually had quite a few problems getting into it.

I would agree that the differences between the movie and the book are distracting, especially if you've seen the movie first and are a fan of it. I had trouble remembering that the book was written first, and therefore this is the "real" order of the events.

HOWEVER, I was very able to put the voices of the actresses in the movie to the speech in the book.

I ended up crying during Vivi's stay at St. Augustine's. And, I'm not sure why, but since the beating and the stay at the hospital that wasn't called a hospital were such pivotal points in all of their lives, I wished more explanation had gone into it. It felt like that was glossed over about 3 times.

I'm glad I read it, though!

Thanks tyvmdear!

Oh, I sent it on to sweetpea0678 today by Priority Mail. She should have it in a couple of days.

Sorry I didn't journal this right away, I actually thought I had, so not sure what I was doing.

Anyway, I tried to get into the book and I just couldn't get past the first chapter, I may try again at a later date, but will send this copy off to the next one in line. Thanks for sharing.

Journal Entry 16 by a1856 from Castle Rock, Colorado USA on Sunday, February 6, 2005
I loved this book! I thought it was going to be a weekend read, but it was more than that in a couple of ways. It did take longer than a weekend. That in itself helped add to the book. I think it gave me time to really delve into and enjoy the relationships in the book. Soooo much better than the movie!

I've sent it on to Ramya in NJ! Enjoy!

Journal Entry 17 by Ramya from Plainsboro, New Jersey USA on Tuesday, February 15, 2005

This book arrived last week, apologies for the delay in journalling - I got so excited I started reading it already! Thanks so much to Ramya for posting this along.

I'm looking forward to reading this as I love the movie and I love "Little Altars Everywhere"; I'm looking forward to more tales of the Ya Ya's.

I will journal back here once finished. Thanks to Tyvmdear for starting this ring!

Journal Entry 22 by miss-gonewest from Perth City, Western Australia Australia on Monday, August 29, 2005
I loved this book. I loved "Little Altars Everywhere". I love the movie.

I am so glad to have read this... it was really quite different to both the movie and the first book which made it even more interesting.

While "Little Altars" covers much of the same material, it was great to read it from a different perspective.

Thanks so much to all involved for getting this book to me to read - I appreciate it. As others have said, I am looking forward to re viewing the movie.

I have PM'd Boucli to get an address so I can get this moving again.

Journal Entry 25 by boucli from Toulouse, Midi-Pyrénées France on Wednesday, September 28, 2005
I loved it !! I've had trouble reading the last quarter of the book, because most of the time I was crying at the same time !! A great story, great characters, the Ya-yas are incredible...
Merci les filles, vous m'avez eue !!!

The funny thing is that I had tried to read "little altars..." a few months ago but I couldn't get into it...So now I'm wondering wether I shall try again or not...This story is great as it is, so I really don't know.

And since you're nearly all talking about the movie, I've found a second hand DVD of it ("Divins secrets" is the french title...) and I'm planning to watch it soon !!!

I've sent it just an hour ago to ann-718my in Malaysia, since Flicki asked to be skipped (too much work, no time to read...)

Journal Entry 29 by wingkihaanwing from Laihia, Pohjanmaa / Österbotten Finland on Sunday, February 17, 2008
Sorry for being so slow with this book... I just finished reading it. I agree, the movie is different from the book but still, that didn't bother me at all, I really like them both! I wish everyone had friends like the Ya-Yas, life would be so much easier when you know that you can always count on them. Parts of the story were very sad, even heart-breaking, other parts really made me laugh. :oD I saw the movie some time ago, after reading the book, I'd love to see it again. We'll see if that happens... I'll send the book to Vamperstein8782 in a few days. Enjoy the story!

Journal Entry 30 by rem_AMJ-898913 on Saturday, February 23, 2008
Arrived safely today, thanks. At the top of my TBR pile.

Journal Entry 31 by rem_AMJ-898913 on Thursday, March 20, 2008
Oh wow, where to start with this book... it made me laugh, made me cry, made me so homesick it hurt!

I saw the film a while back and loved it which was why I jumped at the chance to read the book when this ring came up, but I have to admit that the film pales in comparison to the intensity and vividness of character provided in the book.

I had to stop reading a number of times purely because of how the book made me feel about the relationships in my own life, and at one point I almost decided to send the book on without finishing it. I'm glad I didn't. I know it's a work of fiction, but this has to be one of the singularly most profound life-changing reads I've ever had. Thank you so much for sharing ann-718my.

Will mail out as soon as I have and address for hopi100.

Journal Entry 32 by rem_AMJ-898913 on Monday, March 24, 2008

I just received this book -- thanks for sending! I can't wait to dig into it! :)

Journal Entry 34 by hopi100 from Alexandria, Virginia USA on Friday, April 25, 2008
I loved this book! Friends have recommended it to me for years; I can't believe I managed to make it this long without reading it before.

The characters in this book were so vibrant, so lively, so rich; each one kept me captivated in her or his own way. And the settings -- how they made this Gulf Coast Southern girl feel like I was back home!

Thanks so much for sharing this in a ring! The Ya-Yas will be making their way to ExemploDucemus next week.
