I didn't like this book as much as some of her earlier books. I found it a rather nasty and disturbing read. Could things have really been that bad for female cops back in Atlanta 1974? Maybe. I know that things were not awfully bright for a lot of police women in the 1970s but I know from personal experience that it was nothing like as bad as that in the UK (Met Police anyway)!
I didn't particularly like the storyline either never mind the violent and verbal abuse. If it was based on how life was really like for policewomen (black or white) in those times then all kudos to them for sticking it out but I think I preferred the more gentle approach to 1970s policing for women in Lynda La Plant's "Tennyson" which was set in 1973 when policewomen were then striking out to work alongside their male colleagues. It was a bit more realistic.
